I have had several people ask me if they have to get their monument from a funeral home. Absolutely not! This is some information that I can share
1. Monument Dealer
A monument dealer specializes in headstones, grave markers, and memorials.
What they offer:
Wide selection of designs, sizes, and materials (granite, bronze, etc.)
Custom engraving (names, dates, epitaphs, symbols)
Greater control over design details
Usually, higher expertise specific to monuments
Funeral Home
Funeral homes sometimes sell monuments or work with a monument provider.
What they offer:
Convenience, you can handle funeral arrangements and the monument in one place
They usually coordinate details with the cemetery
Might have a limited catalog of standard options
2. Cost Differences
Generally, funeral homes charge more for monuments than monument dealers.
Why?
The monument supplier must charge more because they pay the funeral home a commission. Usually 10 – 20%
Funeral homes may mark up prices
They add administrative handling
Their monument options tend to be more basic, with upgrades costing more
A monument dealer often offers better prices per size/style and may have more frequent sales.
3. Customization & Choice
Monument Dealer
✅ More materials & styles available
✅ More choices of shapes, sizes, colors
✅ More engraving options (fonts, symbols, artwork)
Funeral Home
⚠️ Usually limited designs
⚠️ Less flexibility in customization
⚠️ May only offer standard packages
If you want a very personalized or artistic memorial, a monument dealer is usually better.
4. Timing & Coordination
Monument Dealer
You deal directly with them.
The dealer will create design, and they handle manufacture.
The monument dealer will coordinate with the cemetery for installation.
May take several weeks or months from order to install.
5. Cemetery Rules & Permits
Important:
Every cemetery has rules on monument size, material, foundation depth, and installation method (often called a “permit”).
