Today after our office Christmas party we managed to convince a neighboring office to take a few somewhat serious photos and then many more not so serious ones. All in all I would say that we had a pretty good time!

Hey, everyone! It occurred to me the other day that we were lacking in the whole Christmas bling department. Don't get me wrong... we had some razzle. Some dazzle. And we definitely had some sparkle. But, sadly, we did not have nearly enough. So, I did what any rational minded woman would do and made a mad shopping dash and did some serious decorating, just before heading off to Vegas! Kindly disregard the previous lukewarm Christmas decor in favor of the new. ;)

“The Forgotten Glory of Clinton, Iowa: Lumber Barons, Mansions, and the City Once Called “Little Chicago”

www.whatsgoingonqc.com

There’s a quiet town sitting along the Mississippi River with a secret most people have no idea about.

Clinton, Iowa.

Today it’s a small city of about 25,000…known mostly for its riverfront views, a few manufacturing plants, and its tight-knit community. But walk through its historic neighborhoods, and you’ll see hints of something grander… huge mansions, elaborate stonework, carved wood porches, wraparound balconies, and turrets towering above overgrown lawns.

This place didn’t always feel forgotten.
Once upon a time, Clinton was the richest city per capita in the United States.

Yes…you read that right.

The Lumber Capital of the World

In the late 1800s, Clinton was booming. Thanks to its perfect placement on the Mississippi River, it became the beating heart of the Midwestern lumber industry. Logs floated downriver from the forests of Minnesota and Wisconsin, arriving in Clinton to be milled and sold. And when the profits started rolling in, the lumber barons built empires…and then they built homes to match.

It earned the nickname “Little Chicago”, not just because of its booming industry and fast-paced wealth, but because of its railroads, riverboats, nightlife, and yes…rumors of organized crime. Clinton was vibrant, bold, and bigger than its size.

Many of those lumber barons left behind legacies carved into wood and stone. Some of the most notable:
• The George M. Curtis Mansion: Built in 1883 by a man who made his fortune selling lumber across the nation. The house itself showcases dozens of different types of wood inside—a showroom of his empire. Today, it’s a museum and a beautiful example of Victorian craftsmanship.
• The Joyce Mansion: Constructed in 1886 by William Joyce, this home still dominates its street with Romanesque design and stained glass windows that whisper stories of power and wealth.
• The Lafayette Lamb House: Once the home of another lumber magnate, built in the extravagant Second Empire style with a mansard roof and lavish interior detail.

These homes aren’t just historic…they’re haunting. Not because of ghosts, but because they remind us of what Clinton used to be: a city of influence, innovation, and unspoken ambition.

So What Happened?

By 1900, the forests up north were running dry. The logging industry shifted, and Clinton’s mills slowed. The town tried to adapt…leaning into manufacturing, railroads, and agriculture…but the economic high point had already passed. Unlike other cities that pivoted aggressively, Clinton held on too long to what it was.

Other Midwestern towns…Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, even the Quad Cities…found new identities. Clinton, for all its glory, quietly faded into history.

But the mansions remained.

And so did the stories.

Today, Clinton is a quiet river town with roots deeper than most people realize. It’s a place where you can stand on a street corner and look up at a mansion that once housed millionaires in top hats, arguing over train schedules and lumber futures.

It’s the kind of place where history isn’t locked behind museum glass…it’s built into the neighborhoods, carved into stair railings and etched into leaded windows.

And maybe…just maybe…it’s a place with one more chapter to write.
