👁️❤️ Why Your Eyes Show Your Heartbeat
Inside the retina (the back of your eye) are tiny arteries and veins that respond in real time to your pulse. With certain imaging tools — like OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) or even simple slit-lamp examination — clinicians can sometimes see pulsations in retinal vessels that correspond to your heartbeat.
These subtle changes happen because:
• Each heartbeat sends a pressure wave through your vascular system.
• That pressure wave can cause small rhythmic changes in retinal arteries and veins.
• Because the retina is the only place in the body where we can look directly at blood vessels without surgery, it offers a unique window into your circulatory system.
🌡️ What Eye Health Reveals About the Body
Eye exams can detect early signs of:
• High blood pressure (narrowing, thickening, or hemorrhages in retinal vessels)
• Diabetes (leaky or fragile blood vessels, swelling, or new abnormal vessels)

Our Story

Dr. Jennifer DenHartog received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington, Indiana. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Psychology, from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Her practice emphasis includes primary eye care and the diagnosis and management of ocular disease. She fits a variety of contact lenses including mulitfocals, keratoconus, soft, and gas permeable lenses. Dr. DenHartog also specializes in the treatment of Dry Eye Disease using the newest diagnosis and treatment tools, including MiBo Thermoflow treament.
