Long post alert!
In celebration of I want to set the record straight about what therapy is and isn’t.

I was recently asked by a clinical counseling student what I most enjoy about my job. The more I learn what my job truly involves this tends to change but what finally clicked recently was that it is not my job to fix other’s problems. Like many in a helping career I went in to counseling because I wanted to help ease someone’s pain. I was a bit lost after being told by my graduate professor that being a therapist isn’t about fixing people.

It wasn’t until accepting and learning through some of my own struggles that as a whole (and definitely me personally) have the wrong understanding of what going to therapy or being a therapist really means. I realized that my job is not to take away someone’s pain but to help them change their relationship with their pain.

Once we can see our struggles through a lens of acceptance the pain softens and doesn’t have to fight so hard to be seen. Therapy offers the space to stay open and accepting when society tells us not to and that is an amazing job perk!

If you or someone near you struggles with their mental health let’s work together to change what it seems like it means to go to therapy. We do not need to be fixed, we need to seen & heard.

One of my favorite things as a therapist is to help parents who might describe themselves as always stressed, yelling or angry find their calm so they can share that sense of calm with their children!
Self-regulation and secure attachment have the ability to impact the mental health for generations to come - like a gift that never stops giving.
If you or someone you know needs support to learn how to better recognize and regulate your emotions, I’m here for you!

Who hasn't considered starting therapy this year?! Here's a great intro for anyone thinking about giving it a try
"Therapy isn’t just for moments of earth-shattering personal tragedies. It can also be useful in reorienting yourself toward your true wants and needs, training yourself in the art of self-compassion, and better understanding, respecting, and communicating your feelings. And—surprise—it’s often easier to pursue these goals when you’re not wrestling bigger, darker obstacles. So consider this your permission to give therapy a try, even if your life is going hunky-dory. Your future self may just look back and say, “Thanks!”

Everything hunky-dory? Great! Now's the best time to start therapy and become an even better (and more productive) version of yourself.

We are in anxious times and our kids can feel it! Here are some great tips for all of you parents/caregivers that might be noticing that your kiddo is acting a bit different.

When the world feels frightening or fragile, kids and teens might respond in ways that fall a decent way short of adorable. They might yell or hit, try to control you, refuse you, push away, push back, or just push. If their behaviour is fuelled by anxiety, it has nothing to do with ‘bad behaviour...
