April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! 🪱
Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal disease caused by foot-long worms, transmitted by infected mosquitoes, that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected pets. If your dog tests positive for heartworm, treatment can be expensive and tedious. It is much easier and less expensive (less than $15 monthly) to prevent heartworms with a monthly chewable medication. This medication works as a “reach-back” mechanism, killing heartworm larvae from the previous month’s exposure. The key to preventing heartworm is giving this every 30 days!
According to the American Heartworm Society:
❤️Heartworm infection has been diagnosed in all 50 states and around the globe.
❤️Heartworm transmission does decrease in colder months, but the presence of microenvironments in urban areas suggests that the risk of heartworm transmission never reaches zero.
❤️Environmental and climatic changes, both natural and those created by humans, and animal movement have increased heartworm infection potential.
❤️Heartworm disease has the greatest morbidity and mortality of any vector-borne disease affecting dogs in the United States
❤️No “natural” or herbal therapies have been shown to be safe and effective prevention or treatment for heartworm disease

Our friend Ozzy came to Cloquet from Texas in 2025. He was diagnosed with heartworm disease with a routine blood test called a 4DX. Here at Cloquet Animal Hospital, we see an average of 1 - 2 heartworm cases each year.
Treatment for heartworm requires a strong commitment from the pet owner. “I found out Ozzy had heartworm on September 11, 2025. It was heart breaking to hear that my puppy was sick with something so scary sounding. Through this time Cloquet Animal Hospital was so gentle and loving to Ozzy while doing testing and treatments! They were also so supportive and patient with me while talking to me about the treatments and payments! Ozzy and I did have our struggles together with balancing all the meds and not being active, but with support from my family and Cloquet Animal Hospital I will always be grateful that I can still hold my puppy in my arms everyday!” - Owner, Catrina.
Ozzy was treated and is negative for heartworm as of February 2026! Now onto living his best life 😊
