Rideability Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc.

Rideability Therapeutic Riding Center, Inc. We offer Equine Assisted Services & Learning to children & young adults with disabilities & veterans. international.

RideAbility’s vision began when watching the power of a horse with a child unable to walk with cerebral palsy. He was given an opportunity to move freely and independently while on the back of a horse– an approach called Therapeutic Riding which is supported by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, P.A.T.H. Watching that child’s physical and emotional connection with the horse, and the way the child’s treatment accelerated, we knew we had found our calling. Combining our passion for riding and teaching therapeutic riding to special needs individuals along with our life-long love of horses, RideAbility opened in Clover SC in 2012 . We bring the benefits of therapeutic riding to individuals with a wide range of disabilities to South Carolina. Wendy Schonfeld the Director of RideAbility is a PATH Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, Advanced Special Olympics Equestrian Coach and a Doctor of Chiropractic. These combined skills allow her to offer a unique perspective as well as absolute competency directing and teaching Therapeutic Horseback Riding at RideAbility.

A new word I recently came across really captures how many kids feel after a long school day: exhausterwhelmulated.

It describes that moment when someone is exhausted, overwhelmed, and overstimulated all at the same time. After hours of focusing, managing emotions, navigating social situations, and processing constant information, many children reach the end of the day completely drained.

Parents feel it too. I need to validate your emotions too.

Those feelings are real, and it is okay to acknowledge them. Taking time to decompress, rest, and reset is important for both kids and adults. Validation matters. ❤️❤️❤️

At RideAbility, joy sometimes comes with little hooves and muddy noses. Our sensory friendly farm including our piggies, Dunkin’ Donut and Munchkin, are three of the happiest members of the barn family, and they bring endless smiles to everyone who visits.

These three sweet piggies absolutely adore attention. If you stop by their pen, you will quickly learn their favorite things in life: big belly rubs and good neck scratches. The moment they see someone coming over, they happily flop down or lean in, hoping for some extra love. Their little grunts and wiggly tails say it all.

Of course, being pigs, they also take their mud time very seriously. Dunkin’ Donut and Munchkin love finding the perfect mud puddle or soft dirt patch to roll around in. It may look messy to us, but to them it is pure happiness. After a good roll in the mud, they are usually ready to greet the kids again with their silly personalities.

But the most special part of these three is the joy they bring to our students. The laughter, the smiles, and the excitement when the kids get to visit them is something truly magical. Sometimes a gentle belly rub or a quiet moment with a silly pig can brighten a child’s whole day.

At RideAbility, every animal has a purpose and a heart for our students, and Dunkin’ Donut and Munchkin remind us daily that happiness can be simple, muddy, and full of love. 🐷💕

At RideAbility barn there’s quite a sight,
Three silly donkeys who bring pure delight.
Dominic, Stella, and Lulu the crew,
Always up to something… as donkeys will do.

Dominic stands like he’s king and joker of the land,
With long fuzzy ears and a carrot demand.
He brays very loudly as if to declare,
“I run this whole barn… now where’s my snack there?”

Stella’s the mama with sweetness and sass,
Trotting around like a true donkey-class.
She nudges the students with gentle affection,
Then steals all the brushes at grooming inspection. Especially with team member Barbara.

And Lulu, oh Lulu, the princess of the day,
Finds all kinds of donkey cuddles to have.
She wiggles, she waddles, she rolls in the dirt,
Then stands looking innocent… covered in dirt.

But when students arrive, something magical shows,
Three loving donkeys with soft little noses.
They nuzzle and cuddle and brighten each day,
In their silly donkey, RideAbility way.

So here’s to our trio with hearts big and true,
Dominic, Stella, and sweet Lulu too.
They may act quite goofy and sometimes quite funny,
But to our students… they’re pure donkey sunshine and honey. 🫏❤️

Magnificent Monday at RideAbility. What a beautiful day it was for riding and spending time with our incredible horses. Today, Finn was introduced to all of his new friends at RideAbility, and he did amazing. It truly was love at first sight. The kids absolutely adored him, and when the high school students got off the bus, they couldn’t wait to meet him.

Our students worked on the horse show course, practicing their skills and showing off their incredible abilities as they prepare to nail it and rock it out at the show. We could not be any prouder of them.

With the warm weather, we also added some bathing and painting activities, helping our students work on creativity while learning responsibility and care for their equine partners.

What a truly Magnificent Monday it has been.

Today was such a fun day hosting the York County 4-H Goat Show Clinic at RideAbility. It was wonderful watching the young showmanship students learn the skills of presenting and handling their goats.

An extra bonus was that our RideAbility students also had the chance to learn about walking goats and even hold some adorable baby goats. There were smiles everywhere and lots of great learning happening.

A great day for everyone involved. Fantastic job to all the students who participated and worked so hard. Special recognition to Megan Hillard and Olivia Valentine for doing such a wonderful job being leaders of this amazing program.

At RideAbility, education is woven into everything we do. Learning does not stop at riding a horse. It includes understanding horse anatomy, identifying parts of the saddle, and recognizing the equipment we use each day to keep our horses and animals healthy and safe. Every lesson in the barn is an opportunity to build knowledge, confidence, and independence.

We believe education is foundational to growth. As students develop riding skills, they are also strengthening executive functioning skills such as planning, sequencing, focus, emotional regulation, and problem-solving. These skills extend far beyond the arena and support success in school, work, and daily life.

Teaching is one of the most meaningful parts of our day. Watching our students absorb new information, apply it, and grow in confidence is a privilege. By enriching their lives with knowledge and hands-on experience, we are helping them build the tools they need to thrive—both in the saddle and beyond.

There are no words that truly capture the depth of our heartbreak when we lose one of our partners. An equine partner does more than carry a rider — they change lives.

Cody Bear, our sweet 30 year old Eeyore, we will miss you beyond measure. Since 2013, when you helped us begin RideAbility, you have touched hundreds upon hundreds of lives. You built confidence. You strengthened bodies. You brought smiles on the hardest days. You were our fuzzy wuzzy, steady and patient, always there. You taught most of our students how to canter. Such a steady boy.

You came out of a rehab retirement, because you wanted to make smiles happen again. Just this week you were trotting and TROCANTERING all over the arena in lessons.

Students laughed with you, cried with you, and wrapped their arms around your neck. And we will never forget your famous reluctance to move forward — but not when a crop with a dangling carrot was involved. Or trotting to me. You made us laugh in ways only you could.

Today we honored you with a beautiful parade, surrounded by so many people who love you so deeply, helping you earn your wings. It was a tribute worthy of the life you lived and the difference you made.

FYI the groundhog has nothing on you, letting us know Spring is almost here with your shedding. Oh why can’t they live longer for us to love?

You are forever loved. You will be forever missed. YOU EARNED YOUR WINGS.

POST A FAVORITE PHOTO OF CODY AND YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY.

Love you and miss you so much Love your mama.💔💔💔
