When we do play therapy, we play with toys that can inspire a lot of new vocabulary, and follow the child's lead. That means that if the child enjoys a specific activity, like stacking dominoes, we do, too! We talk all about it as we go along. "Go ahead, push it! so long!, look! Look at that! Excited! Go fast, go slow! my turn, more dominoes, blue dominoes, all dominoes, look!, move it, I did it!!!"

We narrate the activity that the child is interested in, modeling using words and phrases they might want to say for the activities. It's incredibly motivating and rewarding to talk about the things you find most interesting.

Click the link below to access a free printable card for anyone who stutters. As they put it, "We all know those situations where time is tight, stress is high, and words feel even harder to get out. A security checkpoint. A traffic stop. A hurried conversation with someone who’s clearly in a rush. In moments like that, having a way to quickly and clearly disclose your stutter can take the pressure down a notch.
That’s what this card is for. It gives you the option to share what’s going on without needing to explain it on the spot."

Consider this your friendly reminder: the Stuttering Disclosure Card exists and it’s designed with you in mind!

We all know those situations where time is tight, stress is high, and words feel even harder to get out. A security checkpoint. A traffic stop. A hurried conversation with someone who’s clearly in a rush. In moments like that, having a way to quickly and clearly disclose your stutter can take the pressure down a notch.

That’s what this card is for. It gives you the option to share what’s going on without needing to explain it on the spot.

A good reminder.

A good reminder.

IT TAKES ME LONGER… AND THAT’S OK
I might need more time
to answer, to start, or to finish.
I might need to read it twice—
or hear it said with kindness.

I’m not lazy.
I’m not ignoring you.
I’m processing the world at my pace.

🧠 Support doesn’t mean rushing.
⏳ Understanding means waiting.
🌱 Growth looks different for everyone.

Let me learn in a way that works for me.

Here are some helpful tips to break through moments of frustration, as provided by IEP Individualized Education Program

What looks like refusal is often self-protection. When the brain is overwhelmed, “I won’t” is often really “I can’t — not yet.”
Respond with scaffolding, not shame. Support begins with understanding.
