"AT 4 You" (Consultant - Jennifer Lone) Providing Information and Services Regarding Assistive Technology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Assistive technology or adaptive technology (AT) is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks. Likewise, disability advocates point out that technology is often created without regard to people with disabilities, creating unnecessary barriers to hundreds of millions of people. Even the makers of AT technologies will often still argue that universal design is preferable to the need for AT and that universal design projects and concepts should be continuously expanded.

AAC users may use facial expressions & gestures after typing and, while the final message is being played.

Observing the user's non-verbal cues helps improve our understanding of what they wish to communicate.

Furthermore, it helps to avoid misunderstandings during the conversation.

This is your reminder to meet them where they’re at this week and focus on connection over compliance. 🥰

I was in a session where my student just wasn’t into what I had planned… (it happens… and it happens often! Don’t take it personally 🙃) I cycled through some activities and just wasn’t getting the engagement that I had hoped for.

The thing about communication is, you’re not going to get communication if there isn’t interest or engagement! So that needs to be at the forefront of my mind during my sessions! 🙌🏻

I remembered back to parent-teacher conferences when a parent shared that their child was enjoying “Yellow Submarine” on repeat and we all laughed that there could be worse music to be on repeat on your house! So, I decided to see if I could get that engagement by sharing in a preferred activity and connecting over this interest! 🎶

Guess what? It worked!

I got immediate eye contact and we swayed and rocked across the table to the music together! We sang a little. I got to enjoy some shared smiles. Aaaaaaaaand… I got an independent 2-word utterance that was self-initiated by the end of the session! 🙌🏻🤩

I showed the student the pathway for: actions -> listen -> Yellow Submarine by modeling while playing the song and by the end of the session the student was spontaneously requesting!

So thank you to The Beatles for this awesome session and reminder that the most meaningful and spontaneous communication comes by connecting with our students in whatever ways we can 🥰
