This sweet little bean is her mama’s fourth baby and her third HazelTree babe. But dang! This girl wanted her own story! She was the first of her mama’s babies to go past her guess date and that is such a mental game. Lia’s mama had to work really hard to bring her earthside. She was so held & loved & supported by her family & the HazelTree team. It reminded me of one of my favorite quotes, “There is a secret in our culture & it isn’t that birth is hard. It’s that women are strong.” We can do hard things, & of course Lia’s mama did✨

Ohhh look at this sweet little nugget! Liberty Grace was born at the Peony Birth Center. Her mama labored beautifully supported by her dad. The HazelTree team just watched, & waited. Her mama did such a great job of moving intuitively & listening to her body. Liberty was born en caul✨

So absolutely special to be a part of this sweet family’s care. She is welcomed by eight older siblings, & completely cherished & adored.

Over the years I've had such delightful midwifery students. I always count myself honored that they want to learn & hone their skills with me. There's so much to know, to remember, to fully understand. But some things just can't be taught. Like the art of being still. It's not "doing nothing" because there is literally so much going on in this moment. But you'd never know it from looking at this photo. The art of being still while continually watching, listening, observing, preparing... Quietly contemplating what may happen next and being mentally prepared. Casually looking about the room to verify where the resuscitation tray is, is the warmer still on, is the pitocin syringe in her pocket, are the chux pads ready...

This particular student...she's a dream! She gets it! She knows how to sit quietly, patiently and wait while having her plan and next steps well laid out for those rare "what if" scenarios.

I captured this photo right after I saw her doing a mental inventory...readying for this sweet babe's imminent arrival. As her preceptor, I got a little verklempt in that moment because I didn't see her as my student but as an incredibly aware & knowledgeable midwife. She's the real deal, Folks. And I'm so thrilled to know her and have her as my friend as well as a sister midwife. Our community is better by having her in it. The Milk Maid Coeur d’Alene I love going to births with you!!!

Isaac Johnathan was welcomed into the world on his due date! The HazelTree team arrive with snow falling outside. His mama smiled between contractions, & labored so beautifully with the support of her husband. This is baby number five, & we could tell that their labor dance was a familiar one. This sweet guy was born into the water, & shortly after we heard hushed whispers of his older siblings, “Wake up! The new baby is born!” It was so special to be a small part of this families story, congratulations all✨🫶🏻

The way we give birth matters.

It’s not the method, so much as the ability to choose.

Powerful women choose to birth where they feel safest.
Powerful women choose to birth how they feel safest.
Powerful women choose to birth with who they feel safest.

If we don’t learn how to support vaginal breech birth, we’re taking power away from women & handing it over to the system. It’s not the only choice, but it should be a choice.

Ms. Marcella & her sweet mama needed some help from our friends at Kootenai Health so they could both be safe throughout labor. Whenever mamas are planning for a birth in the community setting, but for medical reasons they need to head to the hospital it comes with a lot of big feelings. Marcella’s family worked together to navigate these sudden changes. Her sweet mama held on to her power, used her intuition & made all the right choices to bring her wee little babe earthside✨

Rowan’s mama holds an extra special spot in the HazelTree team’s heart. When we joined her in labor we witnessed her powerfully use all of the tricks to bring her baby earth side. After a good chunk of time, she realized that the tools needed to help sweet Rowan make his appearance were at the hospital, not at home.

Rowan’s mama made empowered decisions, & advocated so well for herself & finally met her beautiful boy! We were so grateful for Coulee Medical Center for receiving us kindly, & being so willing to respect this mama’s decisions for her birth.
