🌿 Spring Wild Edibles in the Pacific Northwest 🌿
Spring is waking up the forests, fields, and riverbanks here in the Pacific Northwest, and with it comes a beautiful abundance of wild foods. After a long winter, the land offers some of the most nutrient-dense and vibrant plants of the year. If you know where to look, the season is full of edible and medicinal gifts just waiting to be gathered.
Some of the first spring wild edibles to emerge include:
🌱 Nettles – One of the most beloved spring tonics. Rich in minerals like iron and calcium, nettles are wonderful in soups, teas, pesto, and nourishing broths. Harvest young tops (with gloves!) before they flower.
🌼 Dandelion – Entirely edible and incredibly medicinal. The leaves are great in salads or sautéed, the roots can be roasted for tea, and the flowers can be used for syrups, wine, or infused honey.
🌿 Miner’s Lettuce – A tender, mild green that grows abundantly in shady areas. It’s one of the best wild salad greens of the season and packed with vitamin C.
🌸 Violet – The leaves and flowers are both edible. Leaves are gentle and nourishing, while the flowers make beautiful additions to salads, syrups, or herbal infusions.
🍄 Spring Mushrooms – Depending on the region and timing, morels may start popping up in disturbed forest areas and burn zones. A true seasonal delicacy for those who know how to find them.
🌿 Chickweed – A cooling, delicate plant often found in gardens and open areas. Delicious fresh in salads, pesto, or blended into green smoothies.
Foraging is a beautiful way to reconnect with the land and the seasons, but always remember to:
✨ Positively identify plants
✨ Harvest ethically and sustainably
✨ Leave plenty for wildlife and the ecosystem
🌱 This spring we’ll also be offering small field immersion classes where we’ll head out onto the land together to identify, harvest, and learn about the medicinal and edible plants growing all around us. These hands-on experiences are a wonderful way to deepen your connection with the plants and gain confidence in wild foraging.
Spring reminds us that abundance is all around us — sometimes growing quietly right beneath our feet.
✨ Stay tuned for upcoming Bare Root field immersion dates.
