Hello Cohasset Pediatrics Families! We wanted to take a moment to address a common question we get over vacation weeks-can we call in a prescription (like antibiotics) if your child is sick out of state? We know how stressful it is when your kid gets sick while traveling, and we often wish we could help directly, but unfortunately medical laws don't allow it. We also know that appropriately treating your child usually involves seeing them and fully assessing their symptoms.
Each state has its own licensing rules, and as pediatricians licensed in Massachusetts, we can only prescribe when our patient is physically in a state where we are licensed to practice. This includes medications like antibiotics and eye drops. The same rules apply to telemedicine. We can refill your child's existing medications, like asthma inhalers or allergy medications, but we cannot treat new illnesses.
But beyond the legal side, there's also a really important medical reason for this: treating an illness correctly often requires an exam. Many conditions can look similar-what seems like a routine ear infection or strep throat might actually be something else entirely. Without seeing your child in person or through a proper telehealth visit, it's hard to be sure we are treating the right thing and not missing something more serious.
So what can you do if your child needs medication while traveling outside of Massachusetts? The best option is to visit a local urgent care, pediatrician, or telehealth provider licensed in that state. We are always happy to help by providing records or guidance to make the process smoother or to give advice about treating the illness. If you are in Massachusetts, for some illnesses we may be able to see your child by telemedicine if you cannot make it to the office. Safe and legal prescribing is so important, and we appreciate your understanding!
