Child Psychologist Reveals Parenting Habits That Create Struggling Adults

"When parents remove discomfort quickly, children never get to develop coping skills, which can become problematic later in life, he added.

From a behavioral science perspective, children learn confidence by experiencing consequences and discovering they can handle them.

Moran, who specializes in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), said that true resilience comes from “learning to stay present, feel the hard stuff and keep moving toward what matters.”

He identified three common habits that quietly stunt independence:

Fixing instead of coaching: Jumping in to solve every problem teaches kids they that can’t work things out on their own.

Overpraising: Telling a child that they are “amazing” no matter what removes the learning value of effort and feedback.

Overscheduling: Endless adult-organized activities leave little room for boredom which, Moran, said is a place “where creativity and self-direction grow.”

Breaking the Screen–Dopamine Cycle

The screen–dopamine cycle happens when fast-paced, highly stimulating content triggers repeated dopamine releases in the brain.

Dopamine isn’t bad, but constant short bursts from screens train the brain to crave instant rewards and novelty.

Over time, this can make slower activities like reading, creative play, or listening feel boring or frustrating.

Children may seem irritable, unfocused, or restless when screens are turned off because their nervous system is coming down from overstimulation.

This isn’t misbehavior, it’s a brain adjusting to a sudden drop in stimulation.

Instead of more screen time, we can encourage activities that release dopamine more gradually and sustainably.

Outdoor play, movement, climbing, biking, and sensory play help regulate the nervous system and improve focus.

Creative activities like drawing, building, pretend play, music, and crafts strengthen imagination and patience.

Reading together, puzzles, board games, and open-ended toys support attention and problem-solving skills.

Unstructured play teaches children how to tolerate boredom and create their own joy.

When we model balanced screen use and offer engaging alternatives, children learn healthier ways to seek connection, excitement, and calm.
