Difficult emotions can get under your skin if you're not careful. Sport and performance consultant Jessica Garza calls this the "jumping cholla effect," inspired by a sneaky kind of cactus that detaches and burrows its spines into unsuspecting passersby. If You Shut Down When Arguing with a Partner...
1. Tell them when you're getting overwhelmed: "Can we slow this down a bit?"
2. Ask for the time you need: "I do want to talk, but I need to calm down and clear my head first."
3. Be clear how much time you need: "I need 30 minutes," or "Can we continue in the morning?"
4. Understand that your partner may be frustrated at the delay. Be sure to restart the discussion at the time you specified.
5. Let them know if something they did made you shut down (e.g., raised voice, being too harsh).
6. Repeat the process of asking for a time-out if you start feeling overwhelmed again

In order to take control, first you need to identify what’s within your control and what’s outside of your control. Let’s say you’re overwhelmed and burnt out at work. You can’t control the decisions your boss and coworkers make, but you can decide how you will act at work—how you show up early, work with integrity and excellence, and respect others. You can also choose to set boundaries, or maybe even look for a different job. You can choose joy. Learning to control and direct your thoughts, your emotions and your actions is a hard but holy adventure. It can take a lifetime. But no matter how challenging, your thoughts and actions can be tamed. It just takes strength and practice, like working out a muscle.

Promise not to stop when I say when,
