Stay vigilant.
Though eradicated in the U.S., New World Screwworm is resurging in Mexico and Central America, and it poses a real threat to our herds.
▪️ Prior to eradication, NWS cost the U.S. livestock industry over $100 million a year.
▪️ In 2023, cases surged across Central America and Mexico.
▪️ Reintroduction could mean quarantines, movement restrictions, and major losses.
▪️ Prevent it: Treat wounds fast, avoid high-risk procedures, and watch for maggots, odor, or unusual behavior.
Know the signs. Take action. Report suspected cases to your vet, state animal health official, or USDA. Get more information here: https://bit.ly/3LkyjlY
