“To compare birth injury to a common orthopedic injury, there are approximately 200,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries per year in the United States alone. Considering the annual vaginal birth rate of 3 million and a levator ani injury rate of 19% 570,000 women sustain a birth injury per year. Therefore, birth injury affects almost 3 times the number of people sustaining ACL injuries. Even though physical therapy is part of the standard of care management for an ACL injury, far fewer women are receiving care for injuries resulting from birth—injuries that, when left untreated, can lead to short- and long-term disabilities. ⭐️Physical therapists are well positioned to serve as care team members to assist in pain management, functional restoration, and disability prevention in this patient population.⭐️”

🏃‍♀️ People train for marathons, why isn’t training pushed more for one of the hardest things the body does- birth?!

🪻ONE YEAR!🪻

🌷Wildflower Physical Therapy is so grateful to celebrate the first year of being in practice.

🌻In the last year we have helped over 120 clients with pelvic floor dysfunction and educated hundreds of people in the BCS area through community outreach.

🌺A sincere THANK YOU to WPT's clients who have put their trust in us to better your lives, the community for being open to learning about pelvic health, my referral sources who recognize the importance of pelvic floor intervention, and all of the people who have passed the word along to others. I am so very grateful for your support this last year.

💐To celebrate our first year, we wanted to continue our community engagement and give back to the BCS community that has been so good to us! We partnered with a local child care center to provide veggies and flowers for the kids to plant in raised beds. Of course we made one bed a wildflower garden. Thank you to the center for allowing WPT to come and celebrate today!

🍎Back to School!
🍎This has been a hot topic with a lot of parents contacting me about all things potty training! Here are some important things to look at and consider.
🍎Readiness- making sure that your kiddo is ready mentally and physically ready. Signs include things like wing able to stay dry for longer periods of time, having more consistent times bowel movements, and are able to voice feelings of urge (even if it comes a little too late!)
🍎Age- typically we see that ages for beginning to use the toilet are between 3-4 for daytime. It can be up to age 5-6 before they can master night time!
🍎 Regression- regressions are totally normal! You can have a kiddo that has been using the toilet consistently and then all of a sudden go back to square one. This is typical and not something to worry about. Regression can also happen with big life changes: moving, new routine, beginning school or a new class environment! Change is hard and definitely something to consider with a regression.
⭐️ MOST IMPORTANTLY: No shaming or forcing! Learning to use the bathroom is hard and it can be tough to train interoception in kids. It can be hard for adults! Lots of patience and grace during this time for kids and for you as parents. Shaming can lead to even bigger problems like withholding.
🍎 I read something about switching language to call this time Potty Learning instead of Potty Training. This language is great because I feel like it puts less pressure on the situation. We aren’t born knowing how to walk or tie our shoes, we learn! Trial and error and setbacks are totally normal and healthy with learning. If we shift our mindset to learning toileting skills rather than training maybe this can help with the whole process.
🍎 If you have questions about what is normal for potty LEARNING, shoot us a message!

💚My sidekick and I dropping off meals for 2 postpartum mommas today! 💚

📢PSA: Don’t forget about moms AFTER they have their babies! They’re healing and adjusting to a new stage of life! Whether it’s the first or fifth baby, it will always take a village. We need to do better as a society in being there for moms after delivery and not just during pregnancy!

🫶🏽Part of postpartum love can and should include a pelvic floor physical therapy assessment. No matter what type of birth experience you have, it is always a good idea to get evaluated to see where the body is and how to get back to prior level of function safely.

👀 Here’s an inside look at what happens in a pediatric pelvic floor PT session!

👀 Our friend here is testing out her strength, coordination, and endurance of her pelvic floor muscles using our biofeedback machine.

👀 Biofeedback is a wonderful non invasive tool that WPT uses to work with pediatric clients who have pelvic floor dysfunction. Using visual, verbal, and auditory cues, clients can improve pelvic floor function.

👀 The PT uses this information to determine where the issue may lie while the client just thinks they’re “playing a video game with their butt!” 😂
