What is dissociation?
It’s the feeling of being disconnected—from your thoughts, your body, or the world around you.
You might notice it as zoning out, feeling numb, being on autopilot, or like things around you don’t feel real. Sometimes it can feel like you’re watching yourself from the outside.
Dissociation is your brain’s way of protecting you when something feels overwhelming. It’s not random, and it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you—it means your mind learned how to cope.
If it happens, gently bring yourself back:
focus on your breath, name things you can see, or hold something cold.
You’re allowed to feel present and safe in your body again.
