Rooted In Function OT-led nature play helping children and families grow & connect.

Sometimes the best classes leave very few photos behind because everyone is too busy exploring and living in the moment.

This week at Rooted Explorers we read Stick Man, created our own from nature treasures, and set off on an adventure through melting snow, puddles, and the stream.

These are the moments where curiosity, imagination, and connection grow 🌱

You might be over the snow.
They’re not.

This storm brought the kind of snow childhood is made for — the lifting, rolling, building, stay-outside-longer kind.

These days don’t always feel big while they’re happening.
Sometimes they just feel cold, messy, and inconvenient.

But this is what childhood looks like in real time.

Spring will come.
Childhood doesn’t wait. 🌱

This week’s Winter Alchemy session was full of movement, challenge, and discovery outdoors.

Explorers rolled heavy ice balls in our ice bowling game, worked their way through a snowy obstacle course with a goal in mind, created ice paintings, and finished with a walk to visit the horses.

Loving our growing community and the connections being made along the way 🌱

Moments from this week’s Nature’s Hearts sessions ❤️

Fizzy science.
Nature craft.
Snow play.
And lots of shared moments outdoors.

Hands-on play that builds skills, connection, and curiosity — with both new and familiar explorers. 🌱

Glimpses from this week’s Cozy Cocoa class 🌱

Painting snow canvases, mixing up nature’s cocoa, pulling sleds, shoveling snow, and navigating the playground bundled in winter gear. We ended the morning gathered on a blanket in the snow with real hot chocolate and a story about how animals stay warm in winter. ☕️🍫

Frozen snow changes how the body moves. ❄️
Each step invites awareness.

To move across it, children have to:
❄️ adjust pressure and force
❄️ use body awareness to stay light and controlled
❄️ slow down and move with intention
❄️ plan where to step next
❄️ learn through cause and effect

This kind of play supports sensory modulation, body awareness, and motor planning, guided by the environment itself. 🌱

When a winter experiment works on the first try ❄️🍨

Keys to success:
• Patience
• Fully chilled ice cream base and bowl
• An electric mixer
• Oreos

❄️ My daughter’s secret ingredient: sprinkles of snow

Simple ice cream base:
• 1¼ c milk
• 1¾ c heavy cream
• ⅔ c sugar
• Pinch of salt
(Heated just enough to dissolve, then chilled)

And beyond the fun - activities like this are such a natural way to connect with kids while building problem-solving, early science concepts, fine motor skills (scooping, pouring, mixing), and everyday life skills… all wrapped up in curiosity, confidence, and shared moments.
