Joel Bazaldua’s Race to Recovery

Joel Bazaldua’s Race to Recovery On August 11, my cousin Joel Bazaldua was in a skateboarding accident that severely injured his brain.

He was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock that night by ambulance with a traumatic brain injury and brain bleed.

Pt. 2
A few days before Joel’s anniversary, the Baylor University application opened…so he’s working on that now.  We will press on taking recommended steps to help Joel in his second year of recovery (doctors say he needs two years to heal), and in the meantime, rejoice at the opportunity to complete a college application. As well, Joel’s looking forward to his senior year, continuing his classes at Trinity Preparatory Academy and enrolled in two courses at Tarrant County College, pressing on with piano, and training for a local sprint triathlon in October.  Mostly, however, Joel’s emerged from his injury with a heightened fervor for spiritual inquiry—eager to grow in his commitment to Christ and knowledge of the Word and asking a hundred discriminating questions to try to sort out what God calls His:)

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  We couldn’t have come through this treacherous journey without your help.  Each of you out there, those close by and those we’ve never met, has been a thread in this fabric of hope woven in divine providence.  We will always be grateful for your role—your invaluable, holy role in our lives—guiding us from the valley onto higher ground where we could look up and see…

May God bless you in countless ways in return for your generosity shown to our family.  God is so so good!

Pt. 1 Greetings Family & Friends,

It is with utmost thanksgiving to God and appreciation for you that we post this final entry regarding Joel’s recovery.

On August 11, 2023, we celebrated the one-year mark of Joel’s injury.  That was a big day—a day of reflection, praise, and prayer.  We reflected on and praised God for His goodness to ordain and work all for His and our good, His faithfulness to continue to heal Joel, His abundant grace lavished on us during the dark early weeks of recovery, His sustaining providence over the practical strategies of Joel’s recuperation, His hope for Joel’s future yet to unfold, and His presence in the vicissitudes of life-changing circumstances.  As undoubtedly you all know, prayer is the fuel in our engine.  Charles Spurgeon explained it this way: “To pray is to enter the treasure-house of God and to gather riches out of an inexhaustible storehouse.”  We continue, as children of God, somedays confidently and somedays weakly, to approach the mercy seat only to find an indefatigable source of grace and mercy in our time of need.  Prayer, equally is a place of praise along with petition.  So we praise God for His unexplainable goodness to us in healing Joel, and we petition for those whose story isn’t as (yet) hope-filled as ours.  We remember, in particular, two TBI survivors we’ve come to know who still struggle immensely with their injury from the fall, 2022.  And you, likewise, surely will remain in prayer for those surrounding you with need and travail.  Thank you for your faithfulness!

Good Afternoon Loved Ones:
Hope everyone is having a good summer.  Joel finished his summer class and did very well.  We are ever so grateful that Joel was able to finish his junior year in high school plus a summer class.  The second half of the summer Joel will be playing his piano, spending time with friends / family, and going on a family vacation.  Joel was evauated by his rehab doctor 3 weeks ago and was told he has another year of healing.  He has been cleared to swim, bike, and run and is training for a small triathalon in the Fall. Currently Joel is attending K-7 at Kamp Kanakuk - A Christian camp in the Branson, Missouri area where Joel has been asked to give his healing testiomony.   Joel will deliver his message on Tuesday, July 11th.  Please be in prayer for Joel.

Prayer Points:

1) Total healing of Joel’s body, mind, and spirit.  Ongoing improvement is his language skills and comprehension. For his healing to continue at a steady pace over the next year.

2) For Joel to deliver his healing testimony with passion, power, & impact.  For God to receive all the glory for His miraculous work in Joel

3) No further seizures.

4) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

Joel’s injury mainly impacted his temporal lobe- the speech center of the brain. We were told that he would not speak for 3 - 4 months and he spoke the first day coming off life support.   In less than 24 hours from Joel’s accident Ps. Robert Morris prophesied that Joel would speak of the Glory of God to the multitudes.  This prophesy is being fullfiled in Joel’s life already. We are ever to thankful for your prayers and presence in our journey.  God Bless You!!!

Good Afternoon Everyone,
Today is the day which the Lord has made so let us rejoice and be glad in it - Psalm 118:24.  We wake up today rejoicing in God’s amazing grace. Joel is enrolled in summer school and is halfway done and doing well.  He is consistent in his devotions, exercise, school, spending time with family / friends, and piano.  Last weekend Joel had a wonderful time with his two older brothers as Mom & Dad got away for a long weekend.  They spent time cooking, eating, exercising, watching movies, and laughing.  Before the regular school year begins in August Joel will undergo another Neuropsychological test and an aptitude test.  On a daily basis it’s difficult for us to notice any improvement in Joel’s speech but we continue to receive positive feedback from people that periodically visit with him.  His level of comprehension still needs some coaching / attention.

Prayer Points:

1) Total healing of Joel’s body, mind, and spirit.  Ongoing improvement is his language skills and comprehension. For his healing to continue at a steady pace.

2) Protection over Joel as he drives.

3) No further seizures.

4) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

Joel continues to heal at a slower pace but all in God’s timing.  We continue to heal as family as well and we’re ever so grateful for all your prayers, love, encouragement, support of Joel and our family throughout this journey. There is much reciprocation that occurs as we pray for others and see miracles occur.  We pray that you have experienced some rejuvenation in your own faith, family life, and prayer life as you’ve prayed for Joel.  Your prayers have made and continue to make a difference in Joel’s healing and our family.  May your faith be built up that we serve a God that still performs MIRACLES.  God Bless You.

God is so so good!!!!

Update from May 20th: Greetings Everyone:
Joel has officially finished his Junior year in high school.  A total testament to God’s healing power.  When Joel woke up from his coma on August 18, 2022 we were told that he would not be able to attend school for a year.  But God had His own plans.  Joel went back to school 9 weeks after his life threatening injury and only one month after his second cranial surgery.  Joel had the opportunity to attend his high school prom for an evening of food, fellowship, and fun.  Joel’s summer will consist of some school, attending a Christian camp, a family vacation, piano, spending time with siblings / friends, another formal Neuropsychological test,  and of course REST.  Despite Joel’s amazing progress over the last 9 months we are still very diligent in making sure Joel receives his much needed rest for his brain to heal.

1) Total healing of Joel’s body, mind, and spirit.  Ongoing improvement is his language skills and comprehension. For his healing to continue at a steady pace.

2). Protection over Joel as he drives.

3). No further seizures.

4) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

From the depths of despair to dancing at prom night in 9 months. God’s grace and mercy have lavished over Joel.  How can we ever adequately thank you enough for all your consistent, commited, ferverent, loved filled prayers for Joel’s healing.  Your prayers have made and continue to make a difference in Joel’s life. As Joel lay in medical coma in August, 2022 I  perused through his Bible.  Looks like he was studying or had just finished studying Psalm 27 and he had this verse underlined.  “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the DEFENSE of my life; Whom shall I dread? - Psalm 27:1.  Yes the Lord has been the defense of Joel’s life.  We thank you for standing with us through this journey.  God bless you.

God is so so good.

It has been brought to my attention that some of the recent posts got saved in drafts accidentally. I will be catching up with posting some over the next couple days. Sorry for the confusion! Update from May 8: Greetings Everyone:
Summer is around the corner with a break from the normal routine of school and extra curricular activities.  Joel will be done with his junior year in high school next week.  In the midst of his 33 day hospitalization we were told that Joel would not attend school until the Fall of 2023 and that we would have a 16 year old infant. God had plans to show His miracle working power through Joel.  In addition to finishing his Junior year next week Joel has also attended his first college visit.  We continue to be amazed at God’s mercy and grace upon Joel and our family. In 9 short months Joel has gone from a near death experience to a vibrant young man. God is good.

1) Total healing of Joel’s body, mind, and spirit.  Ongoing improvement is his language skills and comprehension. For his healing to continue at a steady pace.

2). Protection over Joel as he drives.

3). No further seizures.

4) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

Not a day goes by without our hearts being filled with gratitude. We are thankful for God’s healing touch. We thankful for Joel. We are thankful for our other children.  We are thankful for His Word.  We are thankful for God’s character.  We are thankful for worship.  We are thankful your presence.  We are thankful for the medical community.  We are thankful for your committed fervent prayers.  We are thankful for your ongoing prayers.  We are simply thankful and we have much to be grateful for. God Bless You!!!

Psalm 20:7 - “Some boast in chariots and some in horses, but we will boast in the name of the Lord, our God.”  Amen and Amen.

Happy Resurrection Sunday to Everyone,

What a day of celebration for all who believe. Joel continues to make progress in his speech.  Recently Joel met up with some prior swim mates at church.  Afterwards they commented how Joel’s speech had improved. That was good news for us as we are with Joel on a daily basis so it’s hard for us to notice his progress.  On occasion his speech can be choppy but it only adds to his sweet personality.  Prior to the accident he was a sweet boy and now after the accident he’s even more sweet.  We just want to hug him all the time.  He continues to exercise regularly on a weekly basis, plays his piano very passionately,  spends time with friends & family, writes poetry, does his homework diligently, and most importantly spends time in the Word. God is good.

Prayer Points:

1) Total healing of Joel’s body, mind, and spirit.  Ongoing improvement is his language skills and comprehension. For his healing to continue at a steady pace.

2). No further seizures.

3) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

Other than Joel’s ongoing healing we are most excited about what today reperesents.  May you commemorate His pain, suffering, and death on the cross on our behalf plus celebrate His victorious ressurection.  “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you” - Rom. 8:11.  May this verse be true in your life.  We appreciate and are thankful for your ongoing prayers.  God Bless You!!

Good Afternoon Everyone:

What a beautiful weekend it has been. Hope everyone has gotten a chance to step outside for some sunshine. Joel continues to slowly increase his physical activity, complete his schoolwork, practice his piano, and spend time with friends and family. He has passed a private driving test and is scheduled to get his real license in the near future. We’re on the home stretch for this semester and we’re praying that Joel will finish strong. Physically Joel appears to be doing well. Academically he struggles with higher level of integrating knowledge, speech (vocabulary), and some memory. We continue to pray for complete and total healing of these areas.

Prayer Points:

1) Total healing of Joel’s body, mind, and spirit. Ongoing improvement is his language skills and comprehension. For his healing to continue at a steady pace.

2). Wisdom on how to help Joel resume his physical activities at at healthy safe pace.

3). No further seizures.

4) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

We are ever so grateful for the place where Joel is at in all areas of his healing. We trust in God’s healing power to move Joel forward in his language / academic deficits. We thank you for your fevrent committed ongoing prayers for Joel. With your prayers we continue to move along this journey with faith that our God still performs miracles. God Bless You.

Greetings Everyone:
God continues to move in our lives as I’m sure he’s moving in your lives as well. Joel had an appointment with his Neurologist on Wednesday, March 1st. Joel’s EEG (brain wave test) was normal. No abnormal brain activity noted. This is good news. His seizure precautions have been eased a little bit. Joel can be left alone for “short periods” of time. Since his accident on August 11th Joel someone has been with Joel 24 / 7. His physical workouts have been increased from 1 hr / day to 1:15 / day. He has been cleared to jog and swim some. No contact sports ever which includes soccer. His medication dosage remains the same but will begin to decrease in 6 months.

Prayer Points:

1) Total healing of Joel’s body, mind, and spirit. Ongoing improvement is his language skills and comprehension. For his healing to continue at a steady pace.

2). Wisdom on how to help Joel resume a full work load at school without overloading him.

3). No further seizures. He’ll need to remain seizure indefinitely or else he’ll be on medication the rest of his life.

4) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

On Tuesday, March 7th Joel has an appt with his Neurosurgeon. We’ll get the results of his Head CT performed 2 - 3 weeks ago. We continue to marvel at God’s grace and mercy for Joel’s healing. We also continue to marvel how your prayers continue to be answered. We are very grateful at your commitment to pray and for standing with us during this journey. God Bless You.

Greetings Everyone:

Spring is around the corner and the seeds we’ve planted will soon bloom.  Many prayers, Scriptures, and prophesies have been spoken over Joel.  We pray that all those words spoken over Joel will flourish and bloom in God’s timing.  Joel is done with Speech Therapy - what a miracle.  We were initially told that Joel would not speak for 2 - 3 months.  God had a different plan.  Joel spoke on the first day after waking up from his coma and is now done with his speech therapy.  Evidence of ongoing healing and answered prayers.  Thank you.  This upcoming Wednesday, March 1st Joel has a Neurology appt and we’ll get the results of his EEG (brain wave test) at that time.  Joel continues on seizure precautions with a moderate dose of anti-seizure medication.

We’re praying that the dose of his seizure medication can at least be lowered. Normal EEG results

4) For Joel’s spirit to be at peace.

For the Moms and Grandmas that have been praying for Joel and eventually meet him the first question they ask Joel is:  “Can I give you a hug?” Joel has very graciously said yes to all of them.  In private he’ll say:  “That’s awkward”. I have to remind myself that he’s 16 and doesn’t yet fully understand the incredible miracle that God performed in his life.  At home when Mom, Dad, or his sisters hug him he’ll say:  "OK that’s enough”. We thank you for your prayers that have allowed so many of us to give Joel a hug and feel him breathe.  We thank you for your ongoing prayers as continues to walk out His miracle. God bless you.
