Why It Works Wednesday

When pain, surgery, or medical recovery limits endurance, your physical therapist helps guide a gradual return to movement based on symptom response.
✅ Tip: Progression is based on tolerance, not fitness targets.

Goal setting sounds exciting… until you’re in the middle of it and it feels hard.

Lets talks about why so many people quit right when progress feels slow — that frustrating phase where you’re doing the work but not seeing results yet. That’s usually the moment people assume it’s not working, when in reality they’re often closer than they realize.

If you’re in that “this is tough” stage right now, hang in there. That’s usually where real change starts to happen.

Helping a loved one move or stand up can be tough — and many caregivers end up hurting themselves in the process.

Position matters. Staying close, using your legs, and keeping your back neutral can protect both you and the person you’re helping. Caregiver strain is real — but the good news is, it’s preventable.

Learning how to assist safely builds confidence and helps reduce unnecessary injuries at home.

👉 We cover techniques like this (and more) in our Functional & Preventive Health Workshop, designed for caregivers and aging adults alike:

📍 Collierville & Germantown — Saturday, February 28 at 9am
📍 Hernando — Saturday, March 7 at 9am

Therapy Thursday Thoughts

Disc bulges are extremely common and often painless, meaning their presence alone does not confirm the source of back pain and must be interpreted alongside movement and function. A physical therapist can help guide you. Source: Systematic review, Spine journal (Brinjikji et al., 2015).

A lot of back pain doesn’t come from injury — it comes from how we move during everyday tasks.

Rounding your back and reaching forward puts unnecessary strain on your spine. Learning to hinge at the hips and keep the load close is a small adjustment that can make a big difference — especially during chores, yard work, and daily lifting.

You don’t need to stop moving.
You just need to move smarter.

Why It Works Wednesday

Your physical therapist builds care plans around symptoms, functional limits, and recovery goals. This helps ensure recommendations fit the individual, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
✅ Tip: As symptoms improve, some people later transition into general fitness programs.
