🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏽‍♂️During running, the Achilles stores elastic energy while the calf eccentrically decelerates your body. In the split-second mid-stance shift to concentric push-off, tendon fibers can be forced past their limits: >4% fiber strain = micro-strain; >8% = rupture.

☢ That transition is the danger zone especially with sprint starts, sharp accelerations, cutting, hills, cold starts, or late-set fatigue.

⁉Why it snaps:

🏃Sudden load spikes (first sprints of the season, hard turns, uphill pushes)

🏃🏼‍♂️Stiff or weak calf complex (esp. under-trained soleus)

🏃🏾Limited ankle dorsiflexion → higher tendon strain at push-off

🏃🏽‍♀️Technique issues (over-striding, low cadence) that increase braking forces

Feel the difference:

✋🏼Strain: sharp pain, localized tenderness, tightness; you can usually limp off.

✋🏾Rupture: a “pop,” immediate weakness, difficulty pushing off, possible gap; urgent eval.

🟢Reduce risk (fast wins):🟢

🟢Warm-up: 5–8 min easy jog → dynamic ankles/hips → 2–3 progressive strides.

🟢Cadence: nudge +5–7% to reduce over-striding/braking.

🟢Soleus strength: bent-knee calf raises (3–4×/wk).

🟢Respect hills: add them after you’ve built flat-ground resilience.

If it barks mid-session: stop sprinting, elevate/heel-lift, gentle pain-free isometrics, and get assessed before returning to speed.
