A strong workforce starts with real-world experience.

Virginia’s new InternshipsVA program announced by Gov. Abigail Spanberger will help businesses across the state design and launch high-quality, paid internships – creating more opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience while building career pathways with Virginia employers.

For Virginia’s Gateway Region, initiatives like this help local companies develop the next generation of talent while giving students a clear pathway to build their careers right here in our communities.

Artificial intelligence isn’t coming – it’s already here, and it’s bringing opportunities.

And VGR's Keith Boswell and Alex Wood learned more when they attended University’s Executive Leadership Series last week. Dr. Jason Baker shared powerful insights during “Riding the AI Wave: Turning Disruption into Distinction.”

The message was clear: AI is reshaping how organizations operate, compete and grow – and leaders must be intentional about how they invest, govern and adapt.

Why does this matter for VGR? Because innovation, infrastructure and talent development remain central to keeping our region competitive in a rapidly evolving economy.

Earlier this week, Virginia’s Gateway Region traveled to Richmond to meet with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership for a working luncheon focused on the future of Dinwiddie County Economic Development and Sussex County, VA.

Stacey English painted a clear picture of readiness in Dinwiddie. With significant infrastructure in place, streamlined permitting and growing workforce talent, the county is positioned to compete – especially in energy. With Dominion transmission infrastructure (including the Locks Campus) and strong transportation access – including the Dinwiddie Airport – the county is leaning into energy as a target industry and embracing emerging opportunities.

David Conmy spoke candidly about Sussex’s history and the lingering impacts on generational wealth. And he highlighted forward momentum: agriculture and mineral resources, the Sussex Green Enterprise Park, and strategic Business Ready Sites investments that are opening doors to major projects — including data center prospects with potentially transformative fiscal impact.

The message to VEDP was clear: partnership matters. Continued collaboration and support can build confidence, accelerate opportunity and ensure these communities reach their full potential.
