Kidney disease is more common than most people know.

• ~1 in 7 adults has CKD
• Only 1 out of 10 people know they have CKD
• People with diabetes or high blood pressure are at a high risk of CKD

The good news is kidney disease can be found early. Simple tests like eGFR and UACR can find kidney disease early.

Yes, you can enjoy the holidays with CKD. It is easier than you think!

Here are some tips to help you make the most of the holidays while managing CKD:

1️⃣ Don’t go to the gathering hungry- Make sure to have a snack before you arrive. You’ll make smarter choices. 🍎
2️⃣ Bring a healthy dish -This way you’ll know there is something you can enjoy, that’s kidney- friendly. 🍲
3️⃣ Eat a variety of foods- Start by filling your plate with vegetables or salad before going to entrees and dessert. 🥦
4️⃣ Practice mindful eating- Eat slowly. Savoring each bite helps you feel more satisfied with less. 🍽
5️⃣ Make movement a habit-Staying active and getting some movement in daily is good for both your physical and mental health. 👣
6️⃣ Enjoy the company- Gather around the table and savor the delicious food prepared for the occasion. ❤️

✨ Remember to enjoy this special time and one meal won’t make or break your kidney health journey!

✨ Making delicious soup that’s good for your kidneys is easy!

Here’s a simple guide to help you get started.

1️⃣ Sauté Aromatics: Sauté onions, carrots, celery, garlic, ginger, shallots, leeks, lemongrass, fennel, or bell peppers in olive oil or avocado oil.

2️⃣Add Seasoning: Use dried herbs like thyme, oregano, or basil. Try spices or blends such as paprika, cumin, coriander, red pepper flakes, five-spice, curry powder, Italian seasoning, Cajun seasoning, or any no-salt mix you like.

3️⃣ Add Hearty Veggies: Include cauliflower, sweet potatoes, cabbage, mushrooms, butternut squash, potatoes, parsnips, or turnips.

4️⃣ Add Stock: Choose unsalted or low-sodium stock if possible..

5️⃣ Simmer: Simmer for 20-30 minutes until the veggies are soft and the flavors are combined.

6️⃣ Add Quick-Cook Items: In the last few minutes of cooking, add any quick-cooking ingredients or pre-cooked items that just need to be heated through. This includes soft or leafy vegetables, beans, tofu, or cooked grains.

7️⃣ Add Toppings: Finish with fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro, grated cheese, croutons, a drizzle of olive oil or balsamic vinegar.

*If you are using uncooked pasta, lentils, or quinoa, add them during the simmering step for the right cooking time according to package directions.

✨ Remember, everyone’s nutrition needs are different, so it's important that you find meals that fit your kidney-friendly eating plan.

Here are a few things to look for in a slice:

✅Less than 140 mg sodium
✅At least 3 g fiber
✅Less than 5 g sugar added
✅ No PHOS listed in the ingredients
