Even though we have made great steps for Black and BIPOC representation in various fields, we must always continue to advocate for those in these minority communities. Dr. Canady is a great example of advocating for his community. He was a successful psychologist, and used his platform to be sure even more followed in his footsteps. This is a huge way to be sure minorities are not erased from places they belong.

Black LGBTQIA+ individuals are the least likely to receive mental health counseling out of any other demographic, even though they have high mental care needs. This can be due to reasons such as financial constraints, fear of poor treatment, and lack of access. Dr. E Kitch made sure those who were often overlooked received care that they needed. This type of advocacy must continue in order for everyone to be heard and receive proper care.

With there being such a shortage of Black and BIPOC representation in the mental health community today, can you imagine how it was back in the early 1900s? Today we have Dr Mamie Phipps Clark. She was the first black woman to earn her doctorate degree in psychology. Without her dedication, who knows where we would be today.

Happy Black History Month!

Did you know about the underrepresentation of black providers in the mental health community?
Approximately 4% of mental health professionals are Black, even though the black population in the US is about 13-14%. Of that 4% - most of the providers are female, which leads to a lack of representation for black men. This shortage of representation leads to a lack of care for individuals who may need a provider that is culturally aware and can relate. There is a growing awareness about mental health in the black community, leading to a need for more providers.

What is DBT therapy?

When first entering therapy it can be very overwhelming to hear the many different approaches that can be used, let alone know what will work for you. Today, we will be learning about DBT. This stands for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

What does that approach look like? DBT helps clients build skills-based and coping-focused tools in order to get through various situations in life.

Traditionally, DBT can be used to manage emotions, reduce self-harm, manage Borderline Personality Disorder, build distress tolerance, and improve relationships.

How Black and Bold Therapy uses DBT:

-Manage Eating Disorders

-Improve interpersonal relationships with assertive communication and setting boundaries

-Managing Bipolar Disorders

-Working with neurodivergent clients in ways that honor their needs, instead of forcing them to conform to neurotypical strategies.

Will this approach work for you? DBT is an evidence-based approach and works well for certain individuals. We have seen great success at Black and Bold Therapy with our applications listed above!

We have completed the first full week of the New Year 🎉. As we continue to move forward, it is important that we give ourselves grace while attempting to complete any new goals we have set. It can be difficult to work towards new goals when hiccups occur, leading to us giving up on our resolutions all together. Remember- if you run into a low moment, you can always pick yourself back up again. You can read more about sticking with New Year’s Resolutions on my blog linked below!

As we move into a new year, the pressure of a complete reset can be overwhelming. This new season should be viewed as a refresh, not a complete reset. Reflecting on the previous year with questions can help with setting intentions for the next.
Examples include: “What were some joyful moments throughout the year?”, “What did I learn about myself?”, or “What is one habit I wanted to change, but didn’t?”.
Start with small goals that are attainable and slowly build from there in order to gain confidence. Do not compare your pace with others and celebrate your small wins at all times. If you are having trouble breaking difficult cycles, issues with motivation, or issues reflecting on difficult emotions, therapy is always a great resource to begin the new year with. If you are searching for additional support, you can book a free consultation below.
✨We are wishing you a safe and refreshing new year! ✨

The holidays can be difficult as we reminisce about our lost loved ones. Continuing traditions without everyone there can lead to feelings of guilt, sadness, and overall dread about the holidays.

While it can be difficult to navigate these emotions, it is not impossible, and your holiday season can still be enjoyable.

1. After losing a loved one traditions can become bittersweet. You can create new traditions, such as volunteering in honor of your loved one, if continuing the old ones seem too difficult.
2. Don’t neglect yourself. Make sure you continue to eat nutritious meals, keep your body moving, and incorporate lots of self care rituals in order to keep yourself relaxed.
3. It is okay to share your emotions. You do not have to act strong if you are not feeling as such. Surround yourself with a good support system and share what you feel. Sharing fond memories of your loved one can be therapeutic.
4. Continue to check in with your therapist if you have one. The holidays can be busy, and we tend to skip these appointments. It is important to keep them as another form of support.
5. Lastly, only do what you feel comfortable with and remember to be gentle with yourself.

❆We are wishing you a safe and peaceful holiday season ❆

✨Feel Good Friday ✨

With the weather getting colder, it is easy to fall into a winter funk.

Just because it is cold outside doesn’t mean you have to give up self care.

Here are 5 ways to take care of yourself this winter season:
1. Write in your journal or see your therapist regularly. The cold tends to keep us cooped up a bit more, which can lead to things like seasonal depression. It is important to prioritize your mental health to keep yourself out of a negative headspace.
2. Try a new hobby. This is the perfect time to try something new. You can finally attempt knitting, attempt a daunting recipe, or maybe do some DIY projects around the house. The options are endless.
3. If you want to get out but don’t like the cold, there is nothing wrong with grabbing a hot drink and driving around to look at local holiday lights.
4. Try online workouts. Your physical health is still important. It can be hard to get out, but there are many online resources that allow you to workout right at home with no additional equipment.
5. Lastly, cozy up with a new book. Light a candle, get a warm drink, and a nice blanket. Take time for yourself to read that book you may not have had time for before.

Happy Friday!

Happy Thanksgiving!

With the fast approaching holidays it can be stressful and overwhelming to deal with eating disorder behaviors.

Here are a few tips and tricks to help get through these moments:

1. Engage in activities that don’t involve food. Play games with family, watch movies, sing karaoke. This takes your focus off of food and onto making memories with family.
2. If possible, have a support person to help you get through the event. It can be helpful to have another person to navigate these moments with.
3. If family or friends make comments about your body or portions set a boundary. Kindly but firmly ask that they do not comment about this. If they cannot respect that, you are free to remove yourself from that environment.
4. Meet with a professional, such as your therapist, beforehand to prepare for the day.
5. Lastly, don’t forget to have fun! You still deserve to have an enjoyable holiday.
