Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care has been the community leader in hospice care for 41 years, founding the hospice movement in the Pikes Peak region.

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care has been the community leader in end-of-life care for almost 42 years, founding the hospice movement in the Pikes Peak region in 1980. We are the only nonprofit, community-based hospice in El Paso and Teller Counties.Every year, we help over 2,000 patients and families navigate the challenges of a life-limiting illness with comfort, dignity and fulfillment. In a business like this, you don’t thrive for this long, nor serve as many patients as we have, without holding to a particular standard. Ours is simple: We believe that hospice care is about living and that every patient and family deserves consistent expert care and compassionate personal attention.

☘️ A little St. Patrick’s Day appreciation goes a long way.

On St. Patrick’s Day, the Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care liaison team hosted a doughnut and hot chocolate bar for the incredible staff at Pikes Peak Post Acute.

It was a small way to say thank you for the compassionate care they provide every day—and a chance to strengthen the partnerships that help our community thrive.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to connect, share appreciation, and support the teams who make such a difference for patients and families. 💚

During National Social Work Month, we’re honored to recognize the extraordinary social workers at Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care.

Social workers are a cornerstone of compassionate hospice and palliative care. They provide guidance, advocacy, and emotional support to patients and families as they navigate serious illness, ensuring no one has to face these moments alone.

Thank you for the compassion, strength, and commitment you bring to our mission and to every person we serve.

We’ve shared several times how delighted we’ve been with the success of our blanket drive. In early January, we asked our community to help replenish our supplies by donating new red, white and blue blankets for veteran patients in our care. We set what felt like a wildly ambitious goal of 100 blankets by March 2.

Word spread quickly through The Gazette, Fox 21, and social media. Thanks to the generosity of knitters, quilters, crocheters, and supporters who donated through our Amazon Wish List, we’ve received more than 150 blankets and counting. Thank you!

The drive also sparked an incredible act of kindness from Mrs. Cooper’s kindergarten class at New Summit Charter Academy. When they heard about the effort, the class created letters and drawings to thank veterans for their service. We have been sharing these thoughtful messages with our veteran patients, and they have meant so much.

Thank you, Mrs. Cooper’s class, for helping us spread kindness and gratitude.

At Pikes Peak Hospice, our care teams travel daily to every corner of our service region to meet the needs of our patients and families, providing expert and compassionate care wherever patients call home. In fact, last year our care team members – nurses, social workers, CNAs, physicians and chaplains – drove 418,854 miles to serve our patients. Their cars are their mobile office, where they document patient visits, transport supplies, consult by phone with physicians, and often where they grab coffee or a bite of lunch.

When the folks at Tommy's Express Car Wash learned about how much our care teams are on the road each day, they stepped up – big time. Becoming annual sponsors, Tommy’s provides free exterior and interior car washes to our mobile care team members, which, in turn, supports our care teams in providing the best service to our patients, 24-7, 365 days a year. This generous sponsorship not only ensures our mobile employees have clean cars on the outside, but also on the interior, thanks to Tommy’s commitment to 15-minutes-or-less interior cleaning services.

“When we learned of the powerful work of Pikes Peak Hospice, we knew we could help,” said Megan Poe, co-owner of three Tommy’s franchises in Colorado Springs (and a fourth on the way). “Treating the nurses and others on the hospice care teams to a clean car, inside and out, gives them a better work environment and lets them know we value the love and care they provide all year to so many patients and families in our community. It’s a real honor to support the mission of Pikes Peak Hospice this way.”

Tommy’s has locations at 4089 Tutt Blvd., (https://tommys-express.com/locations/co30/) 4365 Venetucci Blvd., (https://tommys-express.com/locations/co338/) and at 1540 Garden of the Gods Road, (https://tommys-express.com/locations/co394/) which also boasts their total interior cleaning service – the only one of its kind in the city.

Each year, Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care recognizes a member of the community who makes a positive impact of the lives of residents of our region with our Quality of Life Award, presented at our signature event, Illuminations.

Recipients of this award embody positivity by passion for life and their joy of serving others. This year we are thrilled to announce that the Quality of Life Award will be presented to Dr. David and Paulette Greenberg, recognizing a lifetime of service through both professional and volunteer roles. The Greenbergs have been active members of the community for five decades, including founding the Greenberg Center for Learning & Tolerance in 2003. Paulette has served on over two dozen nonprofit boards, including two terms on the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation board. David has had an illustrious career as a cardiologist, serving as the head of cardiology at Memorial Hospital, (UC Health). Both David and Paulette are longtime champions of heart health, education, community service, and inclusion and dignity for all.

The Greenbergs will be recognized at Illuminations, our signature fundraising event, to be held May 6 at the Doubletree Hotel. For more on Illuminations, go here: https://pikespeakhospice.org/illuminations

When 100-year-old Russell Brehm was wrapped in a handmade red, white, and blue blanket during his veteran pinning ceremony, it was more than a gift — it was a heartfelt thank you.

Russell served our country in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Because of your generosity, veterans like him are surrounded with warmth, dignity, and honor at the end of life.

In January, we set a bold goal to collect 100 blankets for veterans in our care. Our community responded with incredible compassion — donating more than 150 blankets (and counting!). Each one represents gratitude for the 458 veterans we served this year and the 125 pinning ceremonies that recognized their service.

One family member shared that the blanket her mother received will now be passed down to a granddaughter born just days before she passed — a lasting connection that words cannot express.

This is the power of community.

Thank you Colorado Springs Town Tidings - News & Events for sharing the story of our blanket drive for veterans!

A blanket means more than warmth. ❤️

Right now, local veterans in hospice are waiting for a final thank you. 🇺🇸

Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care set a goal of collecting 100 patriotic blankets by March 2. As of yesterday, they’re about three-fourths of the way there. They’re close, but they need a final push from the community.

These blankets do more than cover a bed. They honor a life of service. They remind a veteran, “Your life had meaning.” 💙 And after a loved one passes, families often hold onto the blanket as a reminder of a special moment during hospice care.

Danielle Smeed from Pikes Peak Hospice shared that the blankets become a lasting symbol of gratitude — a final thank you from the community. 🙏

For volunteer Carolyn, this mission is personal. She creates blankets to honor her father, a Purple Heart veteran from World War II, and her son. 🎖️ After years as a nursing home administrator, she saw many veterans near the end of life quietly wonder if their service truly mattered.

No one who served our country should ever feel that way.

If you’d like to help, here’s how:

• 🇺🇸 Donate a patriotic blanket
• 🧵 Make one yourself
• 🤝 Volunteer your time

One blanket can honor one veteran and bring comfort to one family. 🕊️

They’re close to 100. Will you help them get there by March 2?
