Did You Know? Colorado’s rate of alcohol dependence or abuse among persons aged 12 or older was higher (13.2%) than the national rate (9.8%) in 2011-2012. (SAMHSA) While 15.6% of Colorado’s state budget is spent on risky substance abuse and addiction, ONLY 3% of every dollar in that budget pays for prevention/treatment, 97% of every dollar pays for consequences.

RECOVERY SPOTLIGHT ON WESTSIDE CARES:

Westside CARES has deep roots in community compassion. When the Poor Farm closed in 1984, its residents were suddenly without shelter. Churches on Colorado Springs’ west side came together to help their displaced neighbors—providing food, care, and hope. Around Thanksgiving that year, they gathered at Bethany Lutheran Church to give thanks and share pie. From that spirit of gratitude and service, Westside CARES was born.

Today, that same mission continues. Westside CARES partners with organizations across the region to ensure neighbors receive the crisis support they need. They provide groceries at six local pantries, help people sign up for SNAP benefits, and offer snack bags and occasional hot meals from our main office in partnership with Food Trucks Against Homelessness.

Their central office is a welcoming place for anyone in transition—whether you need a safe place to get mail, clothing for job interviews, or help obtaining vital documents. Nurses are available Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., to assist with health concerns, prescriptions, co-pays, and even limited dental or vision needs.

Westside CARES also helps with housing, when possible, for those within its service area. Visit them to learn how we can support you—because caring for their neighbors is who they are.

With a large military community in Colorado Springs, the city tends to also see a high population of veterans experiencing homelessness. That’s why several organizations work to help those vets find housing.
