In 1901 Dr. Fredrick McKay opened a dental practice in Colorado Springs. His persistent quest to identify the cause for brown staining on the teeth of those native-born, led to the transformation of dentistry into a preventive oriented profession. Fluoridated water significantly decreases tooth decay, but too much causes enamel staining and mottling. Fluoride is found naturally in all Colorado Springs water sources, and varies in concentration across our area from low to very high.
