Why You’re Still Bracing

Many people say,
“But my life is good now.”

And yet…

The shoulders are still tight.
The jaw still clenched.
The breath still shallow.

That’s because the nervous system doesn’t live in calendars.
It lives in pattern.

If the body learned that love required vigilance,
it will stay alert—
even when danger is gone.

This isn’t failure.

It’s loyalty to an old survival map.

The work now is teaching the body

but for the version of themselves they had to leave behind.

Self-criticism didn’t come from nowhere.

It developed as a way to:
• stay ahead of rejection
• correct before being corrected
• remain acceptable

At one point, it worked.

But what once protected you
now keeps the heart guarded.

You are not harsh because you’re broken.

You’re harsh because you learned vigilance = safety.

The invitation now isn’t to shame the critic—
but to soften the body beneath it.

Because when the body feels safe,
the critic quiets on its own.

Why Affirmations Don’t Stick

“I love myself.”
“I am worthy.”
“I am enough.”

If those phrases make you tense instead of soothed—
your body is being honest.

Because self-love isn’t cognitive.
It’s somatic.

The nervous system doesn’t respond to words.

It responds to safety.

So when the body is still braced,
affirmations feel hollow,
forced,
or even threatening.

At some point, many of us made an unconscious decision:
“I’ll leave myself…

We softened our needs.
Dimmed our emotions.
Became easier to love.

Not because we were weak—
but because connection mattered more than self-expression.

This is where self-abandonment begins.

Not as failure.
But as protection.

A baby doesn’t come in loving itself.

A baby comes in needing to be loved.

Regulated.
Held.
Seen.
Mirrored.

Self-love is built through experience—
not assumed at birth.

So when love was inconsistent…
Conditional…
Or required you to be a certain way…

The body didn’t say,
“I’m unlovable.”

It said,
“I need to change to stay connected.”

That belief didn’t live in your thoughts.
It lived in your tissues.

And no amount of affirmations can undo what the body learned in relationship.

Only safety can.

The Biology of Belonging

Your nervous system didn’t ask,
“Do I love myself?”

It asked,
“Am I safe here?”

For early humans, being cast out from the group meant death.

So the body learned to prioritize:
• acceptance over authenticity
• adaptation over self-expression
• connection over truth

This isn’t weakness.

It’s intelligence.

Self-love wasn’t necessary for survival.
Belonging was.

And many of us are still living from that ancient wiring—
even though the threat is no longer real.

The work now isn’t self-improvement.

Self-Love Is Not Our Setpoint

Self-love was never meant to be your default setting.

Survival was.

From the very beginning, the human nervous system learned one primary rule:
belonging equals safety.

We didn’t evolve to adore ourselves.

We evolved to adapt.
To read the room.
To sense approval.
To adjust behavior to stay connected.

So if self-love feels hard…
If it feels unnatural…
If it feels like something you “should” be better at by now—
Nothing is wrong with you.

February isn’t about forcing more love.

It’s about remembering where love actually begins.

Not in the mind.
Not in effort.
But in the heart—when the body feels safe enough to return.
