Sometimes the Moon appears wrapped in soft, colorful rings — a delicate phenomenon known as a lunar corona.

This effect occurs when moonlight diffracts through microscopic water droplets suspended in thin clouds.
Unlike ice–crystal halos, coronas are formed entirely by tiny droplets, which bend light into warm yellows near the Moon and cool blues and greens further out.

The more uniform the droplets, the sharper and brighter the rings become.
If the droplets vary in size, the corona turns faint and blurry — which is why most people miss it completely.

Next time you see thin clouds drifting across the Moon, take a moment to look closely.
You might catch this subtle, atmospheric masterpiece shining quietly above.
