In the world of Autism and ABA, we often see children "get stuck" on a specific topic, question, or activity. This is known as perseveration. While it might seem like just a repetitive habit, it actually serves a vital purpose: providing comfort, predictability, and a sense of grounding.

By using strategies like Gentle Redirection and Structured Interest Time, we can respect a child’s passions while helping them develop the flexibility they need for daily life. It’s all about finding that healthy balance!

This is such a powerful reminder of why empathy in law enforcement is everything! 💙

In a moving segment of A&E’s Nightwatch (Season 4, Episode 3), we see the incredible impact of compassionate policing. Officers were called to search for Tyler, a 22-year-old with special needs who has the cognitive age of a 13-year-old. After a small disagreement at home, Tyler simply stepped out for some air, but for his terrified family, it quickly turned into a missing-person crisis.

When the police finally located him sitting peacefully in a park, they didn't escalate the situation. Instead, they showed up with kindness, speaking to him calmly and making sure he felt safe and understood.

The reunion that followed was absolutely beautiful— nothing but pure relief and tears of joy. 😭🙏

It’s stories like this that highlight why disability awareness and community care are so vital. Our officers play such a crucial role in protecting our most vulnerable, and seeing them lead with heart makes all the difference!

Reinforcement is not bribing. It is a basic learning principle. When a behavior is followed by something meaningful, that behavior increases.

Your child asks for help.
You respond quickly.
Asking for help becomes more likely next time.
That is reinforcement in real life.
Simple. Practical. Evidence-based.

At Alpaca Health, we help families understand how these small moments shape big progress.

Autism Word of the Day: Interoception

Interoception is your child’s ability to notice what is happening inside their body. Hunger. Thirst. Pain. The need to use the bathroom.

When these signals are hard to read, daily routines can become stressful. Eating may feel confusing. Toileting may be delayed. Big emotions can show up fast because the body felt “off” long before anyone noticed.

With support, children can learn to tune into their body signals. Visual supports, check-ins, and simple body awareness activities build independence and safety over time.

Understanding interoception helps you respond with support, not frustration.

Those small moments might not seem big at first. But they're building confidence, regulation, and independence step by step. In ABA, we celebrate those small wins. Because small wins turn into lasting growth.

Autism Word of the Day : Echolalia

Echolalia is the repetition of words or phrases a child has heard before. This repetition can happen right away (immediate echolalia) or after some time has passed (delayed echolalia). Many autistic children use echolalia as a way to understand language, process information, and communicate when they do not yet have their own words.

Echolalia can serve different purposes. A child may repeat a phrase to request something, respond to a question, regulate emotions, or continue a social interaction. For example, repeating a line from a favorite show may express a need, feeling, or idea. What may seem like simple repetition often carries meaning.

Research shows echolalia can be an important stage in language development. It helps children learn sentence structure, vocabulary, and conversational patterns. With supportive teaching, modeling, and clear communication strategies, echolalia can develop into more flexible and independent language use.

Understanding the purpose behind echolalia helps parents and professionals respond more effectively and support communication growth.
