Now that we have addressed the CDC currently identifies the top five causes of black infant mortality as:
#1 - Low birth weight (education and preventable)
#2 - Congenital malformations (screenings and education)
#3 - Sudden infant death syndrome (education and lactation support)
#4 - Accidental death/injuries (education and prevention)
#5 - Maternal complication (education and prevention)

It is IMPORTANT to note, the number of causes that CAN be addressed through education and prevention. PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCY has a responsibility to its constituents;
1. Campaigns how to improve Black Infant Mortality
2. Work with "community" based providers to ensure closed loop care
3. Support initiates that emphasis race-based poor outcomes
4. Advocate evidence that supports community AND culturally congruent care
5. Listen to communities, believe them, and reallocate funding appropriately

This week, A Mother's Choice will be highlighting the beautiful Mother/Birther and infant dyad through Womb Cycle. Without healthy Mothers/Birthers there are no healthy babies.

Black Maternal Health and Black Infant Mortality rates are closely connected. As we celebrate and honor Black Mothers and Black Birthers we will dive into why Black infant mortality is a public health crisis by addressing what the CDC currently identifies as the top five causes of black infant mortality.

Taking intentional action is more than showing up to events for photo opps, sharing social media content, or sending emails. Intentional action requires connection with community, providing safe space for all the emotions, and above all else, embracing humanity with love and kindness. You see, when you are doing community work, you are in community both micro-macro prospectively. The work keeps you awake at night, it nudges you to have a courageous conversations, it brings you forward to wear many hats, and to sit in the discomfort of your own mistakes. For me, this picture captures all that I have said. A representation of 7 years of work, continued work, and intentional work.
