1/3 Not all parents know when they are suffering from Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders. The sudden rush of new responsibilities and transition at this level can make you feel distant from the person you were for a time, simply because you're bending in new ways for this wonderful and challenging new season of life.

However, over some time it may become more and more apparent that feelings of detachment, apathy, panic, hopelessness, isolation, irritability (and much more) are persisting and even growing. Parents who were already prone to perfectionism may feel the strain of keeping up that appearance on the outside while the inside has been slowly worn thin.

High-functioning PMADs may mean that you CAN get out of bed in the morning, you CAN keep up with the needs and schedule of the baby, you CAN even meet some of your own needs, however internally you feel ground down by the persistence of PMAD symptoms.

It can feel intimidating to talk to your provider about these things especially if you have appeared to be doing well up until this point. It is so important to know that wherever you are on your journey, you are worth advocating for. Your feelings do not define you but they are important to give space for. Find someone who will listen and see you as the whole person you are; what's on the inside and the outside.
