Thank you for a very special Iftar dinner!

Proud to have a small business in Howard County where culture and diversity is not only tolerated but honored and celebrated! It was a treat breaking Ramadan fast with the larger community.

I first heard Calvin speak over 22 years ago when I was the president of my high school’s Human Relations Club (see last pic). It’s amazing to see he is still so dedicated to this community after all these years.

Happy Spring Equinox! Nowruz Mobarak! Happy Chaitra Navratri! Ramadan Kareem!

This week is all about renewal, new seeds, new beginnings, new energy.

With the start of the Spring Equinox on Monday, when day and night were equally balanced, we are reminded that light always returns to Earth and our days do get brighter.

Nowruz, which falls on the spring equinox, is a 13-day celebration of the Persian New Year. Nowruz translates to ‘new day’. It is the first day of spring, a new beginning, and symbolizes hope for the future.

Today, begins the Hindu festival of Chaitra Navratri. The festival of Chaitra Navratri holds great significance as it signifies the triumph of good over evil and is a time for reflection, prayer, and celebration. During this time, devotees seek the blessings of Maa Durga and strive to embody her virtues of strength, compassion, and wisdom.

For Muslims around the world, this week also brings the start of the auspicious month of Ramadan. A time for deep spiritual reflection, contemplation, and celebration. Ramadan is a period where introspection through fasting is attained and family and community bonds are nurtured to allow us to become better versions of ourselves.

No matter what you practice or what you believe, there is significance and beauty in this time of year, both internally within ourselves and externally within nature and our communities. When we shed and let go of what no longer serves us we are open and receptive to light, allowing new beginnings and new energy to seep in.

On this Women’s Day, I honor my maternal grandmother, my nani. ‘Myna’ was the name that my nani lovingly called me since I was a child. She was an inspirational and influential figure who showed me the power of a woman’s courage, strength, and grace. She persevered against many odds, during partition, raising 5 young children on her own, and moving to a foreign country. Despite it all, she always had a sweet smile and met everyone with kindness. She passed away in November 2021. To me, the word Myna reminds me of my nani and evokes feelings of love, trust, and unwavering connection. ❤️

Dear friends,
I know I have been a bit mum and haven’t posted much this season about yoga and mindfulness. Trust me, I would love nothing more than to market and grow my new venture. But this season, I’ve spent time working deeply on my other passion work- serving and providing for our foster youth and families.

I am so grateful for this community of loving and devoted humans of foster, adoptive and kinship parents, social workers, lawyers, support team and everyone else who supports the children in our care. I am also so proud to be the treasurer of our small but mighty executive team for the Baltimore City Foster Parent Association. My team truly rocks!

This season we partnered with the Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and gave out 150 gifts to foster families in and around Baltimore City! It was a great lift, for a very special cause ❤

Manipura

🕊️This week in class we turned our focus to the Manipura chakra (aka third or solar plexus chakra). Our Manipura chakra resides in the space between the navel and the base of the sternum and governs the fire within us. It is our strength, our vitality, and inner power.

When energy at this center is flowing well, we feel confident, self-reliant, and able to meet challenges with resilience. When the energy here is out of balance, we procrastinate, lack stamina, or feel anger and aggression easily.

A focus on the core stimulates the flow of energy and balances this chakra. Side body stretches, twists (hand to feet twist by Alexandra), and strong core balances (crow pose by Michael), can help to activate our core, ignite our fire, and move us in the direction of our passions.

“Fire is action and transformation. Allowing yourself to grow and become a better version of yourself means taking action and leaving behind what no longer works for you.”

…next week, we’ll work on our Anahata chakra :).
