Tips for Diabetic Foot Care

If you are living with diabetes, here are some valuable tips to keep your feet healthy:

**Inspection**: Conduct daily foot examinations. You can ask a friend or family member to check all areas of your feet. If you're alone, use a large handheld mirror placed on the floor to inspect the bottoms of your feet.

**Moisturize**: Apply moisturizer to your feet every day to prevent itching and cracking of the skin. We have some great options for you to check out at Howard County Foot and Ankle!

**Shoes**: Always wear supportive footwear and limit walking barefoot. Before putting on shoes, inspect them for any foreign objects that could irritate or harm your feet. Ensure you have the right footwear for each season; in winter, wear warm socks and waterproof shoes to avoid frostbite. Your doctor might suggest diabetic shoes if you have specific risk factors.

**Applying Heat**: Avoid using heating pads, electric blankets, or blow-dryers to warm your feet, as these can cause unnoticed burns. Always test the temperature of water with your hand before soaking your feet.

**Medical Monitoring**: Regularly check your blood glucose levels and inform your primary care physician if they rise. Notify your podiatrist if you experience burning, tingling, numbness, or any changes in the appearance of your feet. Refrain from smoking, as it reduces blood flow to your feet. Maintaining proper nutrition and exercising are also crucial for a healthier diabetic lifestyle.

**Exams**: Schedule routine foot exams with a podiatrist to prevent complications. Regular care can significantly reduce the risk of diabetic foot issues, such as infections and amputations. It is advisable to have any toenail problems or calluses treated promptly. Research indicates that well-provided care can prevent up to 80% of amputations.

By following these tips for diabetic foot care, you can help preserve your foot health.

Diabetics are at high risk of developing foot ulcers and infections. Ulcers on the feet can lead to amputation if left untreated. Wound care for diabetics is a specialized treatment that aims to prevent and treat wounds in people with diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease that causes high blood sugar levels, which can damage many parts of the body, including your nerves, heart and circulation system. It can also cause problems with your eyesight and kidneys. When you have diabetes, it means your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or it can’t use the insulin it makes properly. This leads to high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia). Your body gets rid of this extra glucose by either producing more urine or storing it as fat. In this process, wounds may develop on any part of the body as a result of an injury or infection.

Diabetics are at higher risk of developing foot ulcers and infections because they tend to have poor circulation in their feet due to nerve damage caused by their disease. This means they don’t feel pain as quickly as those without diabetes do when they get injured or infected. Contact us if you would like to learn more about our wound care practice here at Howard County Foot & Ankle.
