January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Preventative measures include HPV vaccination to protect against the high-risk HPV strains that cause most cervical cancers. Additionally, early detection through regular Pap tests may find precancerous changes before they become cancer. Also, early-stage cervical cancer is highly treatable. Talk to your health provider for more information.

As Interim Medical Center Director of Truman VA, I want to wish my staff and all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. I am so proud to be part of such an outstanding team. Looking back at this past year, I thought I’d share just a few of our achievements:

• Our Behavioral Health esketamine treatment team recently completed 1,500 treatments for more than 50 Veterans with severe depression who do not respond to traditional therapies. Of the 170 medical centers within VHA, Truman VA is one of 43 that offers esketamine therapy. However, only two other VHA facilities have reached the 1,500-treatment milestone.

• Earlier this month, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that VA permanently housed 51,936 homeless Veterans in FY25. This nationwide number includes 158 Veterans housed by Truman VA – 44 more than the previous fiscal year.

• We celebrated the second anniversary of Truman VA opening a dedicated mammography suite. For the past two years we have averaged more than 1,000 screenings each year. As a result, our women Veterans do not have to go off-site to receive this potentially lifesaving screening.

• On Sept. 19, The Joint Commission completed the medical center’s triannual survey and although we always do very well, this year we had the best survey in our VISN and one of the best in the country!

• On Aug. 7, we held a groundbreaking ceremony for our new Rolla VA Clinic. The new multispecialty clinic will represent an increase in physical space, from 8,600 square feet to almost 75,000 square feet. The new facility also will include 27 exam rooms, six eye lanes, seven dental treatment rooms, two PT/OT rooms, five Telehealth rooms, and 16 Behavioral Health consult rooms.

• Truman VA expanded Cardiovascular Care for rural Veterans with a new program – the National Cardiology Hub and Spoke Network.

• We celebrated the 100 year anniversary of VA Research!

As a Veteran who chooses to receive his health care at Truman VA, I am very grateful for the exceptional quality of service that I receive and that I receive my care from a team I trust. I also want to thank our Veterans for choosing VA. You always will be our No. 1 priority!

Interim Medical Center Director

Our Camdenton CBOC team not only celebrated the holidays today but also one of our own, Stephanie DeVore, LPN. Stephanie (sixth from the right in the group photo and on the right in the second photo) is retiring after 27 years of service to Truman VA. Stephanie was one of the first nurses to staff Truman VA's first community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), located in Waynesville, Missouri. Congratulations Stephanie and thank you for your dedicated service! Happy Holidays to everyone!

Today, Dec. 18, Truman VA staff and volunteers had the option to dress in green or a Grinch-inspired outfit as part of our "12 Days of Holiday Cheer." The Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) embraced the holiday spirit with their Grinch getups. One volunteer went all out with his look and had a little lighthearted fun with our Police Service who "charged" him with public grumpiness. Another of our "Grinches," along with Donna Scoggins, delivered cookies to our Veterans and staff. Happy Holidays to all!
