Sometimes really good things have unintended bad consequences! I want to explain and address an issue that everyone with some form of commercial Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama (NOT Medicare) will notice in the coming days - an increase in your drug prices if you are POS or buying generic drugs that have previously been priced under your standard copay.
Several months ago you may remember seeing news of a push to pass legislation in Alabama that forced Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM) aka insurance companies to reimburse pharmacies at FAIR rates across the board. This legislation passed and went into effect on October 1, 2025. This means, if you were previously paying $2-$3 or less for some generic drugs, you’re now going to be paying your standard lowest copay. And if you’re POS (point of sale) your copays are going up, too. This doesnt JUST apply to BCBS of Alabama. It’s ANY insurance that contracts in Alabama. This was much needed legislation to help keep our pharmacy open!

However, the increase in copays is a direct violation of SB252. Complaints should be made to BCBS of AL (Prime Therapeutics) and to tge Alabama Department of Insurance!
