Do you connect with your child before you correct them?

Remember Dr. John Gottman's advice for couples: understanding must precede advice. The same is true for conversations between caregivers and children.

Think back to a time when you didn't feel heard. Perhaps a loved one jumped into problem-solving mode or corrected you before you could fully express yourself. How did that feel? How might the interaction change if you felt heard and understood?

If you don’t get the response you want when you reach out to your young one, step back and watch how you start the conversation. Are you asking open-ended questions? Are you creating an environment in which your child can share what's on their mind? Seek first to understand. Advice and problem-solving can come after.
