February is National Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of heart health and the steps we can take to protect it. We understand how vital it is to stay on top of your heart health, especially as we age. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, exercise, and managing stress are all key to preventing heart disease and maintaining overall well-being.

Make sure to schedule a visit to your doctor this month for a heart health check-up. Your heart deserves the best care, and so do you.❤️

‘Our results sadly showed that people of Black and South Asian heritage are diagnosed with and pass away with dementia at a younger age.

‘People from these groups are losing more years of life when compared with white participants in the study.’

One of our funded researchers, Naaheed Mukadam, recently came to the end of her project, which looked at ethnic differences in dementia risk factors in Black and South Asian communities, as well as pre and post-diagnostic support.

To share her findings, she held a fundraising and engagement event called Music, Meaning and Memory. The event included Aga Khan Music Award Winner, Soumik Datta sharing new work in progress inspired by Dr Mukadam’s research.

‘My previous work on dementia has shown a lot of people are hesitant to talk about memory problems and dementia symptoms, particularly in the South Asian community.

‘This can be because people think it’s a normal part of ageing or because there’s a sense of shame or stigma surrounding memory problems. So part of the motivation for the event was to open up conversations around memory problems and try and reduce the stigma surrounding them.

‘Music and memory are inextricably intertwined even in people with advanced dementia - a piece of music can spark a memory or generate connection and joy.

‘Sometimes people can find it easier to sing even when they’re no longer able to express themselves through speech. We all have pieces of music that are dear to us that can evoke strong emotions or that can transport us to a distant time and place that is precious to us.

‘So this means that music, meaning and memory are threads that are woven throughout our lives.’
