Substance abuse and mental health are closely connected, as individuals with mental
health disorders often use substances to cope with their symptoms, which can lead to a worsening of both issues.

This relationship is known as a dual diagnosis, where both substance use disorder and mental health problems coexist and can complicate
treatment and recovery.

Today is bipolar awareness day and it’s important to understand what it is.

Why Awareness Matters
Bipolar disorder affects millions of people worldwide, yet stigma and misunderstanding remain common. Awareness efforts help:
• Encourage early diagnosis and treatment
• Reduce shame and misinformation
• Promote empathy and informed conversations
• Highlight that effective treatments are available

If you or someone you know is struggling, reaching out to a trusted healthcare provider or a mental health organization can be an important first step toward support and stability.
Resources:
• NAMI Helpline: Call 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or text NAMI to 62640
• Su***de & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988
• SAMSA's National Helpline: Call 1-800-662-HELP

💚 Staff Spotlight: Kim Hartrum, Outreach Manager

Kim has been part of the NAMI South Carolina team for 2 years, bringing both passion and lived experience to her work every day. After a career in teaching, Kim stepped away to focus on her own mental health journey—and found a renewed sense of purpose through NAMI.

Today, she uses her story to help others understand that recovery is possible, especially for young people navigating their own challenges. What she loves most? Being part of a team that truly values the well-being of youth and shares a collective mission to make a difference.

Outside of work, Kim enjoys cruising whenever she can, long drives with no destination, reading, and crocheting as a way to slow down and reset.

Her message 💬
“Be proud of your small successes and be open with people you trust. Sharing your story invites understanding people to walk alongside you—because isolation is never the answer.”

Thanks for always crushing it, Kim!

Go Lime Green: Mental Health Matters is back for another powerful season!

Since launching in 2021, this initiative has reached nearly 100 schools across South Carolina (and even one in Chicago!) - bringing mental health education, student-led coping strategies, and community awareness to the forefront.

Each game is more than just sports — it's about spirit weeks, student engagement, powerful messages from Hayden Hurst & Ryan Hilinski, and a commitment to building a culture of support.
Schools also take the next step by hosting Ending the Silence presentations for students, families, and staff.

Thank you to Humana & The Hayden Hurst Family Foundation. Together, we're breaking the stigma and promoting mental health awareness statewide.

Today, our CIT Director, Sherri Cloud, presented at the 2026 South Carolina Victims Advocate Network Conference. We appreciate our partnerships and friendships, and are grateful for the opportunity to work with SCVAN, a collaboration that has resulted in years of training and education.
