A Message from Dunbar Funeral Homes:

Protecting the Families We Serve

At Dunbar Funeral Homes, our mission has always been to serve our families with compassion, dignity, and care—especially in life’s most vulnerable moments. That includes protecting you from those who seek to take advantage during your time of grief.

We are heartbroken to share that some of our own families have recently been targeted—and affected—by a cruel and sophisticated scam.

In these instances, scammers contacted grieving families pretending to be from Dunbar Funeral Homes. They claimed that a payment check had not cleared and requested immediate payment through a cash app. The messages were professional, convincing, and even referenced the deceased and names from the obituary—making the deception feel legitimate and urgent.

We want to be clear:

• Dunbar Funeral Homes will never request payment through cash apps, text messages, or unverified third-party platforms.
• Any financial communication from us will come directly from our trusted staff, either in person or through secure and verified channels.

In response to these incidents, we are taking extra precautions to protect every family we serve. Notices are now being posted in our arrangement rooms, and we are clearly outlining our payment policies during each consultation.

If you receive any communication regarding your loved one’s arrangements that seems suspicious in any way, please contact us directly before taking any action.

We know how much trust you place in us during a deeply emotional time. We are here to support you, guide you, and protect you—always.

With heartfelt care,
The Dunbar Funeral Homes Team

Our Story

We are part of the Dunbar family of funeral homes, which has served the people of South Carolina since 1884. Our Dunbar Funeral Home – Northeast location was opened in 2009. Since its founding, Dunbar has continued to grow and has remained a much-respected establishment. Our funeral homes still live up to the standards set forth by founder J.M. Van Metre in 1922, stating:

Our inspiration is to do the right thing at the right time in the right way, to do some things better than they were ever done before, to be courteous, to be an example, to work for love of the work, to anticipate requirements, to recognize no impediments, to master circumstances, to act from reason rather than rule, to be satisfied with nothing less than perfection.

This relentless dedication toward delivering a top-notch and compassionate service for everyone who walks through our doors is a tradition that will continue for generations to come.
