Have you ever noticed these joints on South Carolina bridges?

These are expansion joints, also known as "finger joints" because of their hand-like shape. These steel joints allow bridges to safely expand and contract with temperature changes.

Finger joints can help prevent cracking and can even extend the life of a bridge. A great example of these joints being used is on the newly completed US 1 bridges in Chesterfield County.

Crews recently completed a bridge replacement project on McCords Ferry Road (US 601) over Colonels Creek in Eastover. This bridge project was completed ahead of schedule to help keep traffic moving along this busy stretch. Look at those fresh guardrails and smooth paving!

The new US 301 bridge over the North Edisto River is open to traffic in Orangeburg, but there is still progress to be made.

Crews are working to demolish the old bridge, add sidewalks, connect the original roadway approach to the new bridge, place final pavement surfacing, and install pavement markings.

Please continue to use caution when driving through this area and give crews enough space to work safely.

SCDOT crews have recently been doing repair work on Old Percival Road in Richland County, which was closed in May 2021 due to unsafe conditions of a private dam adjacent to the road.

Now that the private dam has been repaired, SCDOT is removing and replacing an old pipe under the roadway to repave and restore the connection between Percival Road and Smallwood Road.

A detour has been put in place to allow crews to complete the project without traffic.

Patches of black ice remain on roadways, especially in shaded areas, creating dangerous and unpredictable driving conditions.

South Carolina Department of Public Safety has reported more than 1,300 collisions statewide during Winter Storm Gianna. This underscores how hazardous conditions remain and why drivers should stay off the roads until conditions improve and roadways are clear.

Many businesses and counties have closed to protect the public during this storm, and we appreciate their support in helping keep everyone safe.

Please avoid unnecessary travel and use extreme caution if you must be on the road.
