Did you know these yellow signs are called Chevron Alignment Signs?

They’re placed along curves to clearly show the direction the road is turning, especially in areas where visibility may be limited or the curve is sharper than it appears.

They help drivers better anticipate the curve, stay in their lane, and reduce the risk of running off the road.

🚗 When you see them, slow down and follow the direction of the arrows.

A section of the US 701 coastal commute is now safer, thanks to SCDOT’s efforts to improve rural road safety! 🚗🚧

A nine-mile stretch of US 701, connecting Georgetown and Horry counties, recently underwent numerous safety upgrades to reduce crashes along this busy highway.

👷‍♂️ Upgraded guardrails
🛑 Improved road sign visibility
⚠️ Additional rumble strips
🛣️ Wider shoulders and clear zones

These changes were made through SCDOT’s Rural Road Safety program, which has greatly reduced the number of fatal and serious injury crashes on our state’s rural roadways since the program began in 2017.

🚧 In Newberry County, work will soon begin to replace the load-restricted Counts Sausage Road (S-36-244) bridge over Bush River. This project is part of SCDOT’s plan to reduce the number of load restricted bridges statewide.

Through this replacement, the new structure will be brought up to current design standards and provide safe travel for community.

Work is expected to begin this spring and last one year. Drivers should remain alert in the area and follow posted signs and detours. 🚧

The I-26 widening project in Berkeley County is nearing completion.

The interstate is being widened from four to six travel lanes between mile markers 187 and 193. SCDOT is also widening the shoulders of the interstate for added safety, and we’re working to complete two roundabouts at Exit 187 onto SC 27 (Ridgeville Road/Old Gilliard Rd) to help improve the flow of traffic. 🚧

Drivers will also see the eastbound and westbound bridges over the Cypress Swamp fully replaced by the time the project is complete, which is currently scheduled for this fall.

SCDOT is making steady progress in replacing the bridge on Old Vaucluse Road over I-20! 🚧

In the last month, contractors have finished installing the new bridge foundations, columns and girders! And, in the coming weeks, concrete will be poured to form the new bridge deck.🏗️

The project is on track to be finished by this summer! 🛠️

Recently, SCDOT and our contracting partners completed the replacement of the SC 421 (Augusta Road) bridge over Little Horse Creek in Aiken County.

Along with sidewalks on both sides, the new bridge now includes a median, reducing the risk of head-on collisions by creating distance between opposing traffic and improving overall traffic flow.

It's one more way SCDOT is continuing to improve South Carolina's transportation infrastructure.

🚜Spring is mowing season at SCDOT! 🚜

Our crews were out mowing recently along SC 34 in Newberry County at the intersection of Burgess Road. These mowing operations not only help with beautification but also create better visibility for motorists. If you see a mowing crew working, remember to be patient and give them enough space to do their job.

Today, SCDOT and SCDPS held a joint press conference to share an important update: South Carolina is making real progress on roadway safety and we’re not slowing down.

📉 Traffic fatalities are down 21% since 2021, reaching the lowest level in 10 years. That means hundreds of lives saved and countless families spared. This progress is the result of safer roads, strong enforcement, and committed partnerships across our state.

But one life lost is still too many. It takes all of us working together, including you, to make our roads safer.

Today, we also are jointly launching the “Be That Driver” campaign – a new statewide campaign focused on the choices we all make behind the wheel. Because safer roads only work if we all do our part.

🚗 Put the phone down
🚗 Slow down
🚗 Buckle up
🚗 Never drive impaired

Together, we can keep this momentum going and save even more lives. Be part of the solution. Be That Driver.

At SCDOT, separate bridge projects are bundled into a single contract called bridge packages — helping to speed up improvements across the state.

These packages streamline construction timelines and minimize disruptions to your commute. Bridge packages, like the one that included the US 221 bridge over Enoree River last year, help deliver stronger bridges faster!

In December, SCDOT and its partners began converting the four-way stop at Gap Creek, Hampton, and Gary Armstrong roads into a roundabout. This project addresses traffic volume and sight visibility for drivers in the area.

Project work is well underway and due to be completed later this year.

Have you ever noticed the open space along the side of the road? That’s called clear zone.

It’s designed to give drivers a chance to recover if they drift off the roadway, helping reduce the risk of a serious crash.

It’s a simple design choice that can make a big difference in keeping motorists safe. SCDOT is actively creating clear zones throughout the state as part of our Rural Road Safety Program.
