SCDOT recently opened a new bridge on South Hudson Street over the Reedy River in Greenville.

Heavily damaged by Hurricane Helene in 2024, the bridge replacement was placed on an accelerated construction schedule. The new bridge is made of prestressed concrete, making it stronger than the previous structure.

Its completion restores access for both drivers and pedestrians to nearby destinations around Unity Park.

SCDOT and its partners have recently completed rehabilitation work on the S-24-39 bridge over Lake Greenwood in Greenwood County.

Fluctuating water levels caused corrosion to the steel piles, prompting crews to wrap 122 piles with fiberglass grout-filled sleeves to preserve and strengthen the steel.

The project also included repairs to the bridge joints and patching of the bridge deck.

Pictured here in 1950 is the original steel truss bridge on SC 45 over the Diversion Canal in Berkeley County. Built in 1941 as part of a Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie hydroelectric project, this steel truss structure spanned the canal for nearly 70 years.

This bridge was replaced in 2007 with a modern bridge structure. The new bridge was constructed using concrete girders, not steel components. It spans 145 feet and holds nearly 4,000 vehicles each day.

Work is continuing on the rehabilitation of the Church Street Bridge over East Broad Street in Greenville. Nearly a year into its renovation, crews have replaced the bridge's bearings and are constructing a new sidewalk.

This month, work will pause on the project to allow traffic to flow freely during the 2026 NCAA March Madness event. The bridge will close completely in May to finalize the rehabilitation. The project is still scheduled to be finished this summer.

The bridges on US 1 in Chesterfield County are a good example of how SCDOT works with community partners to make sure our roadway projects are the best fit for the environment.

With this project, SCDOT was able to construct three new bridges and a wider shoulder for the roadway, all while protecting local natural resources.

Crews recently completed a bridge deck pour for one of the spans on the new I-20 westbound bridge in Kershaw County, near mile point 96.
Once the new bridge is complete, Westbound traffic will be able to shift off the Eastbound bridge onto the new Westbound bridge.

Once complete in fall 2027, this new bridge will carry traffic over the Wateree River and provide a smoother riding surface for travellers.
