😬 TMJ Dysfunction – Jaw Pain, Clicking, or Tightness?

TMJ Dysfunction refers to irritation or poor mechanics of the temporomandibular joint—the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint or the surrounding muscles aren’t working together properly, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and dysfunction.

🔍 What Causes TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ issues are often multifactorial, including:
• Jaw clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism)
• Poor posture (especially forward head posture)
• Stress and muscle tension
• Trauma or whiplash injuries
• Dental alignment or bite issues
• Prolonged mouth opening (yawning, dental work)

🚨 Common Symptoms

• Jaw pain or tightness
• Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds
• Headaches or facial pain
• Ear pain or pressure (without infection)
• Limited mouth opening or jaw locking
• Neck and shoulder tension

🏠 4 At-Home Therapy Tips to Reduce TMJ Symptoms

1️⃣ Controlled Jaw Opening
Place your tongue gently on the roof of your mouth and slowly open and close your jaw.
👉 Keeps the joint moving in a safer, more controlled pattern.

2️⃣ Masseter & Jaw Muscle Release
Use your fingers to gently massage the jaw muscles along your cheeks and near the jawline for 1–2 minutes.
👉 Helps reduce muscle guarding and tension.

3️⃣ Posture Reset (Neck + Upper Back)
Sit tall, gently pull your shoulders back, and tuck your chin slightly.
👉 Poor posture directly increases stress on the TMJ.

4️⃣ Heat or Moist Heat
Apply warm heat to the jaw area for 10–15 minutes.
👉 Improves blood flow and relaxes tight muscles.

🎄🎅 Are you asking for a new knee this Christmas❓

What happens during a knee replacement? What can you expect?

1️⃣ The Goal

A knee replacement (Total Knee Arthroplasty) reduces pain and restores mobility by resurfacing damaged cartilage and bone—most often due to arthritis or long-standing joint degeneration.

2️⃣ What Happens During Surgery

✔️ Incision: Made along the front of the knee.
✔️ Damaged cartilage/bone removed: Femur, tibia, and sometimes patella surfaces.
✔️ Shaping the joint: Surgeon prepares smooth surfaces for the implant.
✔️ Implant placement: Metal + medical-grade plastic components recreate the joint.
✔️ Patella tracking check: Ensures smooth kneecap movement.
✔️ Closure: Sutures/staples + sterile dressing.

3️⃣ What to Expect After Surgery
• Anesthesia wears off within hours
• Therapy usually begins the same
day or within 3 days
• Swelling + stiffness are normal
for weeks
• Walking aids used early on
• Pain management as prescribed
• Gradual mobility + strength
improvement

4️⃣ Typical Recovery Timeline (a general guide. This time frame may vary)

Weeks 1–3: Reduce swelling, regain basic mobility
Weeks 4–8: Strength + walking tolerance improve, ROM goal 0–120°
Months 3–6: Functional strength and daily activity confidence return
Months 6–12: Long-term recovery and full joint comfort

5️⃣ Tips for a Smoother Recovery
• Stay consistent with your rehab program
• Ice/compress for swelling control
• Keep incision clean/dry
• Walk daily (within tolerance)
• Avoid high-impact activities early
• Report redness, heat, fever, or
excessive swelling

🦾 Reverse Shoulder Replacement — What You Need to Know

What Is It?

A reverse shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure where the normal ball-and-socket structure of the shoulder is switched — the ball is placed on the shoulder blade, and the socket is placed on the arm bone.

Why Would You Need It?

You may be a candidate if you have:
• Massive or irreparable rotator
cuff tears
• Severe shoulder arthritis
• Rotator cuff tear arthropathy
• Complex shoulder fractures
• Shoulder weakness where lifting
the arm is very painful or nearly
impossible

This procedure is chosen when traditional shoulder replacement wouldn’t work well due to poor rotator cuff function.

What Is Recovery Like? (This may vary significantly depending on surgeon/therapist protocol and patient specific pathologies).

Phase 1 (0–4 Weeks):
• Arm in a sling with a cushioned pad
• Gentle pendulum movements
• Focus on healing and reducing
pain

Phase 2 (4–8 Weeks):
• Gradual increase in shoulder
mobility
• Begin deltoid strengthening

Phase 3 (8+ Weeks):
• Functional strengthening
• Return to daily tasks
• Progressive improvement in
mobility

Full recovery can take 4–6 months, depending on your goals.

How Orthopedic Specialized Occupational Therapy Helps 🦴🦾

OT plays a critical role in restoring function and independence by helping you:
• Safely regain range of motion
• Strengthen the deltoid and
supporting muscles
• Restore daily activities like
dressing, grooming, lifting,
reaching
• Modify tasks to protect your new
shoulder
• Improve confidence and reduce
fear of movement

An Orthopedic Specialized Therapist helps guide you through a safe, structured plan tailored to your life and goals.

✅ What is the difference between a traditional and reverse total shoulder replacement❓ ...

11/21/2025

A radius fracture can make everyday tasks frustrating — turning a doorknob, playing sports, carrying groceries, brushing your hair, performing work tasks, even typing.

An Orthopedic Occupational Therapist, helps patients regain:
💪 Strength
🌀 Mobility
🤲 Functional use of the arm
🎯 Confidence in daily activities

Recovery is a process, but you don’t have to do it alone. With guidance and the right therapy plan, the radius heals — and so does your function.
