Widows of Opportunity™, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Columbia, SC, was started in 2011 by Founder and President, Miss Kimberly Richardson. Her mission was to provide consistent support to widows that she did not receive after she lost her husband in 2003 in an auto accident. She started with a group of four widows as a part of a monthly support group that she hosted at her church. Miss Richardson continued this effort consistently as she reached out to bring in other widows to her organization. She used word-of-mouth, technology tools, and social media to bring awareness to the organization and to promote her efforts to the public. She posts motivational messages to the public on the Widows of Opportunity™ page that has attracted hundreds of followers across the globe. In 2013, Richardson became a motivational speaker, and participated in various conferences and speaking engagements to talk about her experiences and to promote her organization. As of today, the network of four widows that was started in Columbia has expanded to include over 100 widows across the country, including South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Texas and abroad, including Africa and Australia. Widows of Opportunity™ has been profiled by various media outlets to bring exposure to the organization, including television and radio stations. 22 years ago, I lost my husband. Heartbroken, but determined, I turned that grief into purpose.

15 years ago, I started an organization that has since helped people worldwide and internationally, keeping his memory alive while connecting with those navigating loss. I’ve shared this journey on stages, radio, TV, and in magazines—touching lives across the globe.

Grief doesn’t end love. It can ignite it. ❤️

Grief will change you… but sometimes, it creates something beautiful.
I lost my husband—and out of that, Widows of Opportunity was born.

I met Mr. Allen, who lost his wife a year ago. He told me he couldn’t sleep at night… so he started painting just to pass the time.

He said it was a mess.
It wasn’t.
I was blown away.

“Mr. Allen… you’re an artist.”

I became his first customer… and just like that, something beautiful came out of his grief.

Grief is hard… but sometimes, if we let it, something meaningful can come from it. 🤍

She missed her husband’s funeral. Nine years later, she finally got to say goodbye.

After surviving the accident that took him from her, she carried a DVD of the funeral—never having seen it herself.

We met at the cemetery. She pressed play for the first time, and the emotions she held for nearly a decade came rushing back. Together, we stood at his grave, shared a quiet moment, and released balloons in his memory.

Grief has no timeline. Healing can come even nine years later.

Some moments remind me why I do what I do.

At one event, after speaking to hundreds, a woman came up, fell into my arms, and just cried—grateful it’s okay to feel and express emotions. ❤️

Another moment, I was hosting a gratitude event for supporters of Widows of Opportunity. Hugs, thank-yous, shared smiles—reminders that this work is never done alone.

Two different moments, two different emotions, one same purpose: connection and healing.

I will never forget my husband. His loss gave birth to Widows of Opportunity, a community that has supported and uplifted widows and the bereaved across the country and around the world.
