The holiday season can be a reminder of who isn’t physically with us anymore, or how things are different in general. Any loss typically results in the 5 stages of grief (Kubler-Ross), in no particular order or length of time. The goal of going through the stages of grief is to reach “Acceptance”, but this doesn’t mean getting over it or forgetting. Acceptance is more about learning how to live with the loss, which for some people can be transformative. This holiday season, it’s ok to mourn whoever or whatever we have lost, in the hope that one day we can live life with an added perspective.

The holidays are the toughest time of year for people who are struggling with mental health, substance use, relationship issues, and so much more. I tell a lot of my clients it feels like the one time of year when a spotlight is shining on all of our problems that do not fit the traditional “holiday commercial” norm. A big part of emotion regulation is validating our own emotions! Outside validation can only go so far, and we always have the option to validate ourselves! Ways to do that: affirmations (positive remarks) about yourself, telling yourself it’s ok to feel your feelings, and prioritizing your needs even if it feels selfish. Lastly, feel your feelings! Easy to say, hard to do, but if we openly feel, instead of stuffing our emotions, they tend to not be as intense and eventually pass. How can you validate yourself today?

Now that my son is a toddler, we have been watching a lot of Sesame Street! And one of my favorite songs has to do with problem solving! As a therapist, I observe that a lot of my clients are struggling with emotion regulation not necessarily because they have a mood disorder, but more because they lack effective problem skills. Next time you have a problem, channel this song from Sesame Street and analyze your results! “I wonder?”, “What if?”, “Let’s Try!” You’ll never know how it goes unless you try it first!
