A little nerdy 🤓 polyvagal theory for your feed this Thursday afternoon.

Learning about the different nervous system states has been SO helpful personally and professionally. When you can bring awareness to these different states and see how it can affect your thoughts and behaviors, and what choose instead to actually regulate, it can be life changing!

There’s no such thing as “good” and “bad” foods. All foods provide nutrients no matter what. Yes, some foods have more vitamins, minerals, and fiber. And some foods have more joy, community connection, and fun memories attached.

Remember all foods fit in a balanced eating pattern. 🫶🏻

You didn’t fail the diet, the diet failed you. They don’t work for 95+% of people!

Would you feel like a failure if you took a medication and it didn’t work for you? No! You’d blame the medication!

So why do we blame ourselves for something that is set up to fail?

You deserve to learn how to fuel your body from a place of kindness, not hatred. 🫶🏻

Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses. It isn’t just about the food, or just about control.

One step to working on recovery? Getting in touch with your emotions (yes, the very thing EDs usually try to numb or dissociate from, I know! 😫)

On the surface, we see ED behaviors like restriction, compulsive exercise, or purging. But there’s a function to them, or else you wouldn’t be doing them. What is the function? What difficult emotion is below the surface? And what is it you actually NEED that’s not your ED?

“But I don’t work with folx with trauma or EDs, so why would I need to learn about trauma-informed care?”

“Trauma who-be-whatty?”

“But I’m not a therapist, why should I be learning about trauma?”

As a Dietitian, if you work with humans, you should be trauma-informed. Being trauma-informed doesn’t mean you’ll be diving into the details of your client’s trauma, but it can help you be INFORMED, COMPASSIONATE, and KNOWLEDGEABLE with their care. It will help you recognize when trauma is present and how to work with it. It will help you with your therapeutic relationship. It will help you teach your clients about their nervous systems and how food relates to trauma. Simple put, it’ll help you just be a better human. And better clinician.

Without a healthy relationship to food, “healthy” foods aren’t going to truly be “healthy”. Without balance, variety, and flexibility, those healthy foods could be doing more harm than good.

Healthy nutrition is about eating healthy foods AND having a healthy relationship to food. 🫶🏻🥝🍊🫒🍎🥖🍔🥦

Food has no moral value. You aren’t good or bad based off what you eat, it’s literally just food.

So try to bring awareness to any thoughts or talk such as “I’m so bad for eating that extra dessert!” Or “I’m being good today by eating a salad😇 “

❌❌❌

These aren’t helpful in anyway, and only make YOU feel worse when you eat something your brain seems as “bad” and further conditions your brain to use the narrative that there are good or bad foods.

Without adequate carbs, protein, and fat, our bodies will remain hungry. The #1 contributor to bingeing is restriction. Our bodies are super smart, and the more we try to “control” our diet, the more at risk we are to become OUT of control!

Quit the dieting, find balance, give yourself permission with all foods, and learn to trust & listen to your body. 🩵
