Research Spotlight: Recombination of monkeypox virus (MPXV) strains has been documented with two cases of a recombinant strain comprising clade Ib and IIb MPXV reported. In an outbreak update published on February 14, the WHO states that clade differentiation PCR assays alone may not reliably identify recombinant MPXV strains, and genomic sequencing is likely to be required for their detection.
