Is posting twice in one day… allowed? Asking for a surgeon 👀😂

Couldn’t let the day go by without giving a shoutout to Marisa—an absolute rockstar circulating nurse—who helped keep everything running smoothly during an EGD and lap chole with intraoperative cholangiogram today.

Grateful for her and the entire team—because great surgery doesn’t happen solo. 🙌

☘️ Happy St. Patrick’s Day! ☘️

Fueling up with a midday coffee ☕️ before getting back to what I love—precision surgery. Whether it’s laparoscopic or robotic, I take pride in delivering efficient, minimally invasive care with the best outcomes for my patients.

Steady hands, sharp focus, and a little caffeine boost never hurt. 🍀

Balancing a busy elective practice while taking acute care surgery call in Pulaski and Lawrenceburg keeps things interesting. Emergency surgery doesn’t wait. ⏱️

Grateful to work alongside incredibly talented partners—this week they tackled a complex foregut case with impressive skill and teamwork. Proud to be part of a group that shows up for patients day and night. 💪🩺

Hernia Repair Recovery

Most hernia repairs are outpatient procedures, and patients are usually walking the same day 🚶‍♂️. To protect the repair, patients should avoid lifting more than 25 pounds for 4 weeks 🏋️‍♂️❌.

For the first 2 weeks, avoid submerging the incision in water 🌊, including pools, lakes, and hot tubs 🏊‍♀️, to reduce the risk of infection.

Some discomfort is normal after surgery, and I work closely with patients to develop an effective pain control plan 💊 so recovery is as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Love this!!! Get your screenings

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about one of the most preventable cancers with routine screening. 💙

At Southern Tennessee Regional Health System – Pulaski, our surgical team plays an important role in providing care for patients who need colorectal procedures. Their skill, teamwork, and dedication help ensure patients receive safe, high-quality care close to home.

Regular screenings can help detect colorectal cancer early—when it’s most treatable—and in some cases prevent it altogether. If you’re 45 or older, talk with your healthcare provider about when you should begin screening.

This month, we’re proud to recognize our incredible surgical team and the difference they make for patients and families in our community. 👏

Hernia Myths I Hear All The Time 👇

As a general surgeon, there are a few things I hear about hernias that simply aren’t true.

Myth 1: “If it doesn’t hurt, it’s not a hernia.”Many hernias cause little or no pain at first. The most common sign is actually a bulge that appears when standing, coughing, or straining.

Myth 2: “A hernia will heal with rest.”Unfortunately, once a hernia forms, the defect in the abdominal wall doesn’t close on its own.

Myth 3: “A hernia belt fixes the problem.”Belts and binders may temporarily hold things in place, but they don’t repair the weakness in the abdominal wall.

Myth 4: “Only men get hernias.”While some hernias are more common in men, women absolutely get hernias too.

Myth 5: “You should wait until it hurts.”Waiting can turn an elective repair into an emergency surgery, which carries higher risks and a tougher recovery.

The best time to repair a hernia is usually before it becomes an emergency.

Hernias don’t get better with time — they only get bigger and can become dangerous. Repairing a hernia electively allows time to plan the safest operation, optimize a patient’s health, and often perform the repair minimally invasively with faster recovery.

When hernias are ignored, they can become incarcerated or strangulated, meaning intestine becomes trapped and loses blood supply. At that point, surgery becomes an emergency and may require bowel resection, longer hospital stays, and carries higher complication risks.

The best surgery is the one done before it becomes an emergency.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a hernia, talk to your surgeon about planning repair before it turns into a much bigger problem.
