Mindfulness isn’t always what we think it is.
It’s not always sitting still with your eyes closed, trying to quiet your mind. For a lot of people, especially those who have been living in survival mode for a long time, that kind of practice can actually feel impossible.
I was talking with a client recently who has six kids, eight dogs, and runs two businesses. Her system is constantly in motion, and she kept saying, “I know mindfulness would help… but I can’t do it.”
And the truth is, jumping straight into meditation in a life like that isn’t the place to start.
So instead, we look for what’s accessible.
Maybe it’s the breath. Maybe it’s standing in a balance pose and focusing just enough so you don’t fall over. Maybe it’s something as simple as eating one meal without distractions and actually noticing the experience.
Mindfulness doesn’t have to be separate from your life. It can exist right in the middle of it, in small moments of attention and awareness that begin to create space where there wasn’t any before.
It’s not about forcing stillness. It’s about building capacity, one moment at a time.
