CN V-VII nerve transfer for right sided facial paralysis after tumor surgery. Notice there is a lag compared to the left side, as patient must remember to “bite down” to activate the right side of the face. But his smile looks natural and fabulous!

Sometimes a (or a nose job, in colloquial parlance) may be performed to restore function and/or address trauma. In this case, we straightened the nose in an effort not only to improve aesthetics but also breathing. When tackling such a challenge, it is helpful to determine what components—bony bridge, cartilaginous dorsal, nasal tip—are creating the crooked appearance. Making a deviated nose perfectly straight is an impossible task. Perfection lies in the hands of God. However, in striving for excellence, I hope to come close.

Thanks for a memorable week at Loma de Luz Hospital in Honduras with a great crew of physicians and anesthetist from Old Dominion (EVMS) Otolaryngology Department (Eric Dobratz, William Dougherty, Robert Frederick, Kristina Powell, Allison Goldberg, Carrie Muller). These experiences are rejuvenating and restorative not only for our patients, but for our care-givers as well.

Rhinoplasty to restore form and function
After a nasal injury sustained during mixed martial arts, we corrected a collapsed nasal dorsum and improved breathing. Using cartilage grafts from the patient’s ear, we rebuilt the nasal framework—restoring both structure and natural aesthetics.

3 YEARS AFTER | Functional + Structural Rhinoplasty

3-year postoperative result following extracorporeal septoplasty to improve form and function. Pre-operatively, the nose was severely twisted, and the septum was blocking the nasal passage.

Post-op: Long-term stability and straightening maintained.

Removal of a cavernous hemangioma of the . No laser needed; just a scalpel and patience. "After" photos were taken 2 weeks post removal. Leaving a little residual may be preferred to creating a deformity. Will see how it heals over the next few months!
