As our chief digital transformation officer, John Lock helps lead digital change at MedStar Health. But recently, he needed cutting-edge care himself.

John was born with a rare condition that placed his heart on the right side of his chest, and it had started to put him at risk.

Watch this NBC Washington story to see how our cardiac surgeon Dr. Christian Shults stepped in to repair John’s uniquely positioned heart.

It’s a powerful reminder of what can happen when skill and compassion come together.

John Lock was born with his heart on the opposite side of his chest. It was never an issue until he developed atrial fibrillation — a common heart condition that put his life at risk and created a major challenge for doctors. That’s when a D.C. surgeon stepped in to take on the case. For most of...

Have you ever wished you could look a caregiver in the eye and simply say thank you?

This Doctors’ Day, two patients were given that opportunity.

Each shared a handwritten letter—honest, personal, and deeply meaningful. Their physicians then read those words aloud on camera. The reactions speak volumes, including a moment no one anticipated.

These are the reminders our caregivers carry with them: that compassion, presence, and dedication can leave a lasting impact on the lives they touch.

This Doctors’ Day, you can share that gratitude, too. A message or a gift in honor of a physician is a powerful way to recognize the providers who go above and beyond for their patients every day.
