Movement of the Month: Shine Your Heart ✨

Thoracic extension isn’t about forcing a backbend.

It’s about reclaiming space
through the middle of your spine —
literally giving your heart room to move inside the ribcage.

It’s about staying upright and fluid.
Capable of moving through the world
without being confined to rigid posture.

When your upper back moves well:
• your neck doesn’t have to overwork
• your shoulders feel lighter
• your breath expands more easily
• your pelvis doesn’t have to compensate

Here are a few of my favorite drills:

☝🏼 Single-finger spinal mapping – proprioception + awareness
🧱 Thoracic extension over a foam roller – segmental opening
🦢 Prone Swan with a Pilates ball – integrating core + adding gentle load
🌀 Thread the Needle – rotation + breath
🧍‍♀️ Wall-referenced Y-W-T – organizing head, neck, and shoulders upright

Remember:

Extension is not compression.

Think length.
Think lift.
Think “shine your heart” forward —
not crank your ribs up.

Small, consistent reps > aggressive stretching.

Save this.
Try 1–2 today.

Let your spine move freely —
with encouragement into extension.

As always, meet your body with patience and curiosity,
not judgment and expectation.

The fenceline of your tolerance will slowly expand —
and your freedom to move comfortably will expand with it.

✨ February Movement Pattern: Shine Your Heart Through

This month we’re focusing on active thoracic extension—not to chase perfect posture, but to support how the body moves, breathes, and coordinates as a whole.

What the research shows:

• Exercise programs with posture training and spinal extensor strengthening can reduce excessive thoracic kyphosis linked to functional outcomes (PMID: 34546447).
• Back extensor strengthening improves spinal pain, strength, endurance, and mobility in women with vertebral fractures (PMID: 31352573).
• Greater thoracic kyphosis is associated with altered shoulder motion and function, highlighting the thorax as part of the upper-quarter system (PMID: 27475532).
• Individuals with pelvic floor dysfunction often show altered breathing mechanics (PMID: 32043787), and the diaphragm and pelvic floor function as a coordinated pressure system (PMIDs: 17304528, 19874658, 20627854).

What we don’t know yet: Thoracic extension alone hasn’t been proven to directly change pelvic floor outcomes, although our pelvic floor therapists often see meaningful functional change with treatment progressions that include active thoracic extension with most of our patients.

What we do see clinically: When thoracic mobility, breathing coordination, and strengthening improve together, function and coordination often improve too.

This isn’t about forcing posture. It’s about creating space to breathe, move, and integrate across the whole system. 💙

Save this for later—and try shining your heart through.

Consistency is probably the most important parameter of any physical activity and wellness plan. Not load, volume, type of exercise, speed, duration, etc. (although these obviously impact outcomes as well).

The number one thing to master is finding a way to sustainably move your body and make this a part of your identity. Become the person who moves.

This is where change happens. Not overnight but over time. You’ll be amazed what can happen when you make movement habit.

Spine Align is quickly becoming our most popular class. We have yet to find anything quite like it anywhere else.

This class is for everyone, but especially if you:

-sit for your job
-have chronic low back or neck pain
-have pelvic floor tension and pelvic pain
-struggle with posture
-have scoliosis
-have hypermobility or connective tissue disorders
-have core imbalances or weaknesses

In this class we target:

✅ alignment: position the body and prime your muscles to get more out of your exercise investment
✅ stability: find your deep core to provide the spine with the balanced support it needs
✅ spinal articulation: learn the principle of segmental motion to promote optimal spine health
✅ mobility: find mobility in the shoulders and hips to stop stealing motion from and placing stress on the spine
✅ multiplanar movement: move the spine safely with control through flexion, extension, side bending, and rotation to maintain flexibility and control at any age

As one of our members recently said: “This is better than physical therapy!” We don’t know if we’d go that far, but the class is led by physical therapists and is essentially group rehab for the spine. Only four participants per class to enhance the individualized instruction!

Change takes consistency and time, but it is amazing what progress our committed community members have experienced. How would it feel to begin that journey today? What would it cost to wait?

Better Begins Today.
We hope to see you there!
